Chapter 14 - THE SPRING SHOW

The spring show took place six months after Mia first entered Verrone Hall.
The school auditorium was different.
New security doors.
Trained staff.
No hidden weapons.
Parents filled every seat.
Damiano sat between Sofia and Isabella.
Rafael stood against the wall.
Nico attended with his wife and daughter.
His shoulder had healed.
The red ribbon from the warehouse rested inside his wallet.
Mia walked onto the stage wearing a white dress with blue ribbons in her hair.
She held a new paper heart.
This one was larger.
The lines were still crooked.
She approached the microphone.
“Last year, I borrowed a father for one day.”
The audience smiled.
“He was very expensive.”
Laughter moved through the room.
Damiano raised an eyebrow.
Mia continued.
“He had a big house.”
“Too many serious friends.”
“And no dog.”
More laughter.
“Then I found out he was really my father.”
“But that did not mean he knew how to be one.”
Damiano looked toward Isabella.
She smiled.
“So we made another contract.”
Mia lifted the heart.
“My job was to tell the truth.”
“His job was to listen.”
“My job was to go to school.”
“His job was not to send ten guards into the classroom.”
Rafael looked down.
“His job was to protect me.”
“My job was to remind him that protecting someone does not mean controlling everything they do.”
The room became quieter.
“I have two mothers.”
“Sofia taught me how to survive.”
“Isabella gave me life and came back when bad people tried to erase her.”
“They do not have to compete.”
“Love is not a chair with only one seat.”
Sofia began crying.
Isabella reached for her hand.
Mia looked toward Damiano.
“And I have one father.”
“He scares many people.”
“Sometimes he scares himself.”
“But when I asked him to kneel, he did.”
“When I asked him to talk first, he tried.”
“When I asked him to stay, he stayed.”
Mia opened the paper heart.
Inside were four names.
Mia.
Sofia.
Isabella.
Damiano.
At the bottom was a paw print.
The dog had arrived three months earlier.
A massive black Newfoundland named Contract.
Damiano hated the name.
Mia refused to change it.
She looked toward the audience.
“Family is not who owns you.”
“It is who tells you the truth and stays after the truth becomes difficult.”
The audience stood.
Applause filled the auditorium.
Damiano did not move at first.
He had been applauded at political dinners.
Feared inside courtrooms.
Obeyed in rooms where men negotiated territory.
None of it felt like this.
Mia ran from the stage.
She stopped in front of him.
“Contract renewal?”
Damiano looked at the paper heart.
“What are the terms?”
“You stay forever.”
May you like
He took her hand.
“Accepted.”
