Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Silvio was taken alive.

That decision surprised everyone.

Damiano could have killed him on the dock.

Three years earlier, he would have.

Mia had asked him to talk first.

Isabella had asked him not to answer grief with blood before knowing the truth.

Silvio’s trial before the five families would reveal every captain, banker, and official involved.

Death would have made him silent.

Silence had already cost them too much.

Nico survived the gunshot.

Rafael carried him from the warehouse.

Damiano promised protection for his wife and daughter.

The red ribbon remained wrapped around Nico’s finger when paramedics arrived.

At the estate, Isabella stood inside the blue sitting room.

She touched the furniture as though walking through a dream.

Mia watched her from the doorway.

Sofia stood behind the child.

No one knew how to begin.

Damiano entered last.

His hands were bandaged.

A bruise darkened one side of his face.

Isabella looked at him.

Three years separated them.

So did secrets.

Pain.

A daughter who knew another woman as Mommy.

Damiano stopped several feet away.

“I buried you.”

“I know.”

“I stood beside an empty coffin.”

“I know.”

“You should have trusted me.”

Isabella’s eyes filled with tears.

“You would have killed Silvio before I had proof.”

“Yes.”

“You would have started a war.”

“Yes.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

Damiano looked toward Mia.

“Everyone keeps calling silence protection.”

Isabella lowered her eyes.

“I was wrong.”

The admission mattered.

Sofia stepped forward.

“She was being hunted.”

“She did what she believed would keep Mia alive.”

Damiano looked at her.

“And you raised my daughter without telling me.”

“I tried to contact you.”

“Your security team intercepted every message.”

“Silvio had men inside the estate.”

“I did not know which men were his.”

Rafael stood near the hall.

His shame remained visible.

Damiano understood more now.

Silvio used Rafael’s credentials.

The priest betrayed the church location.

Two estate guards had accepted Marchetti money.

Isabella’s fear had not been imagined.

It had been surrounded.

Mia walked between the adults.

“Can everyone stop talking like I’m not here?”

The room became silent.

She pointed toward Sofia.

“You are Mommy.”

She pointed toward Isabella.

“You are Isabella Mommy.”

Then she pointed toward Damiano.

“You are tomorrow Daddy.”

Damiano raised an eyebrow.

“Tomorrow?”

“The school show ended.”

“So the contract expired.”

Mia nodded seriously.

Damiano looked at the torn red heart.

“What happens if I want another contract?”

“You have to ask.”

The most feared man in New York knelt.

“Mia Verrone, may I be your father for longer than one day?”

She considered him.

“What do I get?”

Rafael turned away to hide a smile.

Damiano answered.

“A home.”

“Protection.”

“School lunches without men carrying guns.”

“Can I have a dog?”

Sofia covered her face.

Isabella laughed through tears.

Damiano nodded.

“One dog.”

“Two.”

“One.”

“One big one.”

“Agreed.”

Mia held out her hand.

Damiano shook it.

“Contract accepted.”

Then she wrapped her arms around his neck.

Damiano closed his eyes.

For three years, he believed his heart had died beside Isabella.

May you like

It had not died.

It had been waiting inside a little girl carrying a crayon heart through a crowded room.
