Chapter 12 - THE HOUSE WITHOUT SHADOWS

Mia moved into the Verrone estate one week later.
She chose the bedroom closest to Sofia’s.
She refused the pink room prepared by the decorator.
“It looks like bubble gum exploded.”
Damiano ordered it repainted.
Mia chose pale yellow walls.
A shelf for books.
A small desk near the window.
And a bed large enough for the dog Damiano had not yet purchased.
Isabella moved into a separate suite.
The arrangement became the subject of gossip across the Upper East Side.
The mafia king’s wife was alive.
His daughter had been raised by a nurse.
The wife and husband were not sharing a room.
Damiano ignored every whisper.
For once, scandal served a purpose.
Everyone watched the family publicly.
That made secret violence more difficult.
Sofia remained Mia’s legal guardian until the courts could resolve the false death records and birth documents.
Damiano did not challenge her.
His attorneys expected him to demand immediate custody.
He refused.
“Sofia protected Mia when I did not know she existed.”
“She does not lose her place because I discovered mine.”
Sofia heard about the statement from Rafael.
That evening, she found Damiano in the garden.
“You could take her from me.”
“Yes.”
“Why don’t you?”
“Because Mia would never forgive me.”
Sofia smiled faintly.
“Is that the only reason?”
“No.”
Damiano looked toward the chapel.
“You stayed.”
The words carried everything.
Gratitude.
Regret.
Respect.
Mia’s first week at the estate was not peaceful.
She entered Damiano’s office during meetings.
She asked armed guards why they dressed like funerals.
She replaced a bowl of expensive cigars with crayons.
She called Don Carlo “the loud grandpa.”
Carlo pretended to be offended.
Then he brought her an enormous stuffed bear.
Rafael became responsible for school transportation.
Mia asked him questions during every drive.
“Have you killed people?”
“Yes.”
“Did you say sorry?”
“Not to all of them.”
“You should.”
“Some are unavailable.”
She thought about that.
“Then say sorry to the people who miss them.”
Rafael had no answer.
The child did not transform the men around her through innocence alone.
She made them hear simple questions without the protection of complicated excuses.
Isabella began rebuilding the foundation.
Every account became transparent.
Hospitals received the money stolen from them.
Families displaced by the weapons routes received anonymous compensation.
Damiano removed his father’s name from the largest clinic.
The board proposed naming it after Isabella.
She refused.
They named it after the shelter nurse whose body had been used in the false car identification.
Her name was Elena Brooks.
A woman the public never knew had been sacrificed to hide Isabella.
Mia attended the reopening.
She placed flowers beneath Elena’s photograph.
“Did she have children?” Mia asked.
“No,” Isabella said.
“Then who remembers her?”
“We do.”
May you like
Mia took Isabella’s hand.
“Then she has family now.”
