Chapter 7 – The Woman Who Woke Up

The intensive care unit was unusually quiet.

Only the rhythmic beeping of heart monitors disturbed the silence.

Deputy Court Administrator Helen Brooks lay motionless beneath crisp white sheets, a ventilator hissing softly beside her. Bruises darkened the side of her face, and a thick bandage wrapped around her head.

Judge Eleanor Whitmore stood outside the glass, her arms folded tightly across her chest.

For fifteen years, Helen had been more than a colleague.

She had become family.

"I should've seen it," Eleanor whispered.

Daniel Ross stood beside her.

"No."

"They knew exactly where to hit."

Two FBI agents guarded Helen's room around the clock.

Every visitor was screened.

Every hallway camera monitored.

No names appeared on the public patient registry.

Officially...

Helen Brooks wasn't in the hospital at all.

Ross intended to keep it that way.

"If the Garden thinks she's dead," he said, "they'll make mistakes."

Across town, another team continued searching Claire's encrypted files.

Cyber analyst Sarah Kim suddenly froze.

"I found something."

Ross hurried into the lab.

Sarah enlarged a handwritten note hidden inside an image file.

Claire had disguised it beneath the pixels of an ordinary family photograph.

The message read:

If Helen is alive... trust her before anyone else.

Eleanor stared at the screen.

Claire had known Helen.

But she had disappeared eleven years earlier.

How?

Another hidden sentence slowly appeared beneath the first.

Helen never betrayed us.

Ross frowned.

"So someone wanted us to think she did."

Sarah nodded.

"The login to Helen's account..."

"...was almost certainly staged."

Someone had deliberately planted evidence pointing toward Helen.

If Noah hadn't remembered the timeline...

...the FBI might have arrested one of the few innocent people left.

Late that night, Noah couldn't sleep.

He wandered into the hospital chapel.

The room was empty except for rows of wooden pews and a single stained-glass window glowing beneath the moonlight.

He quietly sat in the front row.

A few minutes later, Eleanor found him there.

"I used to come here with Mom," Noah said softly.

Eleanor sat beside him.

"What would you pray for?"

Noah smiled sadly.

"Not to be hungry."

Her heart broke.

"And later?"

"For Mom to stop coughing."

He looked toward the cross.

"I don't pray anymore."

"Why not?"

"Because God kept taking everyone away."

Eleanor wrapped an arm around his shoulders.

"I don't think He took them."

Noah looked at her.

"I think evil people made terrible choices."

Back upstairs, Helen's heartbeat suddenly accelerated.

Doctors rushed into the room.

Ross and Eleanor watched through the glass.

One nurse leaned close.

"Helen?"

Her eyelids fluttered.

Then slowly opened.

Ross stepped inside.

"Helen."

She struggled to focus.

After several seconds, recognition appeared in her eyes.

"Daniel..."

"It's okay."

"You're safe."

She weakly shook her head.

"No..."

Her voice barely escaped her lips.

"They're..."

She coughed violently.

Ross leaned closer.

"Who?"

Helen grabbed his wrist with surprising strength.

"The judge..."

Ross nodded.

"Eleanor's here."

Helen looked directly at Eleanor.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Don't..."

"...go home."

The room fell silent.

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Helen."

"What happened?"

Helen's breathing became uneven.

"He..."

She swallowed painfully.

"...was already inside."

Ross frowned.

"Who was?"

"The man fixing..."

She closed her eyes.

"...the elevators."

Ross immediately looked toward Sarah.

"No maintenance was scheduled."

Helen nodded weakly.

"He smiled."

"What did he say?"

Helen's fingers trembled.

"He said..."

"...'Tell the Orchard we're ready.'"

Before Ross could ask another question—

Every light inside the ICU flickered.

Then the power went out.

Complete darkness swallowed the floor.

Emergency generators failed to activate.

"What the hell?"

Ross drew his service weapon.

The emergency exit alarms began screaming.

Doctors shouted.

Patients cried out.

Outside the hospital, the entire block lost power.

Sarah's voice crackled through Ross's emergency satellite radio.

"Daniel!"

"We've got multiple power failures across downtown!"

"Only downtown?"

"No."

She paused.

"Every hospital connected to the city grid."

Ross's blood ran cold.

"This wasn't an accident."

A nurse burst into Helen's room.

"Someone just disabled the backup generators!"

Ross rushed into the hallway.

One security guard lay unconscious near the electrical room.

Another had disappeared completely.

Ross pressed the emergency elevator button.

Nothing.

Stairs.

He sprinted toward the stairwell.

The heavy steel door slowly swung open on its own.

Inside...

A flashlight rolled down one of the concrete steps.

Someone had just been there.

Ross raised his weapon.

"FBI!"

No answer.

Only footsteps...

Running upward.

Fast.

Very fast.

Ross chased the sound, climbing flight after flight.

By the time he reached the rooftop access door—

It slammed shut.

He burst through it.

The rooftop was empty.

Except for a helicopter disappearing into the night sky.

Its navigation lights blinked once...

Then vanished into the storm clouds.

Ross lowered his weapon.

Too late.

Back inside the hospital, the lights suddenly returned.

Emergency systems restarted.

Doctors rushed back to Helen's bedside.

She was still alive.

Barely.

But something had changed.

Resting on her blanket...

No one knew how it got there.

A fresh white envelope.

Ross carefully opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Eleanor...

Standing beside Noah in the hospital chapel.

Taken less than thirty minutes earlier.

On the back, five words were written in black ink.

WE SEE EVERYTHING YOU DO.

Ross looked slowly around the room.

Someone had entered one of the most heavily guarded hospitals in Philadelphia...

Walked into a room full of federal agents...

Left a photograph...

And vanished without leaving a trace.

For the first time in his career...

May you like

Daniel Ross wondered if they were chasing an organization...

Or an invisible ghost.
