Chapter 12 – The Blue Journal

The Whitmore house had never felt so empty.
For twenty-seven years, Eleanor had walked through those halls believing they held only memories.
Family dinners.
Birthday celebrations.
Claire's laughter echoing from upstairs.
Noah's tiny footsteps running across the marble floors.
But tonight...
Every shadow felt different.
Every corner felt like it was hiding a secret.
Daniel Ross stood beside her as agents searched every room.
"The Orchard knows about this place," he said quietly.
Eleanor looked toward the staircase.
"He has always known."
Ross studied her.
"What do you mean?"
She touched the wooden railing.
"Claire was born here."
"She grew up here."
"Every important moment of her life happened under this roof."
Her voice became softer.
"If someone wanted to understand my daughter..."
"...this would be the first place they would watch."
Ross looked around carefully.
"Do you believe he has been here?"
Eleanor didn't answer immediately.
Because deep down...
She already knew.
"Yes."
The word was barely a whisper.
"He has been here."
Upstairs, Sarah Kim searched through Claire's old bedroom.
The room had remained untouched since the day Claire disappeared.
The walls still carried faded photographs.
A younger Claire smiling beside her mother.
Claire receiving her first law degree.
Claire holding Noah as a newborn.
Sarah opened drawers carefully.
Nothing.
She checked under the bed.
Nothing.
Inside the closet.
Nothing.
Then she noticed something strange.
A small section of the wooden floor looked newer than the rest.
"Daniel."
Ross walked in immediately.
"What did you find?"
Sarah pointed down.
"This floor was replaced."
Eleanor entered behind them.
Her face changed.
"No."
Ross looked at her.
"You know something."
Eleanor slowly approached the damaged area.
"When Claire was sixteen..."
"She broke this floorboard."
Ross waited.
"She was hiding from me."
"Why?"
Eleanor smiled sadly.
"Because she thought I was angry."
"But I wasn't."
"What was she hiding?"
Eleanor knelt down.
"A diary."
Sarah looked surprised.
"The blue journal."
Eleanor nodded.
"She wrote everything in it."
Ross frowned.
"Then why didn't you give it to us?"
Eleanor looked away.
"Because after she disappeared..."
"I couldn't open it."
The room became quiet.
"It was the last thing my daughter touched."
For years...
The journal had remained locked.
Untouched.
Protected.
A memory Eleanor couldn't bear to lose.
Sarah carefully removed the loose floorboard.
Underneath was a small metal container.
Old.
Rusting.
But still sealed.
Everyone stared.
Ross whispered,
"She hid it from everyone."
Eleanor reached forward.
But stopped.
Her hand trembled.
"What if this is what he wants?"
Ross answered immediately.
"Then we find out why."
She opened the container.
Inside...
Was a blue leather journal.
A faded photograph.
And a small flash drive.
Everyone froze.
Sarah picked up the flash drive.
"This is it."
Ross stared.
"The original files?"
Eleanor opened the journal.
The first pages contained exactly what she expected.
Teenage thoughts.
Poems.
Dreams.
Memories.
Then she reached the middle.
A page had been torn out.
Ross noticed.
"Someone removed something."
Eleanor turned another page.
More pages were missing.
Sarah scanned the journal carefully.
"Wait."
She pointed.
"Look at the binding."
She carefully examined the spine.
"There are hidden pages."
Eleanor frowned.
"Hidden?"
Sarah nodded.
"Claire didn't remove pages."
"She added them."
Using a small tool, Sarah carefully separated the stitched leather.
Inside the journal...
A thin collection of handwritten pages appeared.
Claire's handwriting.
But these words were not from a child.
They were from a woman who knew she was being hunted.
The first sentence made everyone freeze.
"If you are reading this, then Victor Kane has already found me."
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Ross leaned closer.
Sarah continued reading.
"I spent years believing power was the problem."
"But I was wrong."
"The problem was the people who controlled it."
Another page.
"I discovered something about Victor."
"He was never the leader."
"He was only the face."
Ross exchanged a glance with Eleanor.
Sarah turned the page.
The next line was underlined.
"The Orchard is not a person."
"The Orchard is a system."
Silence.
Ross slowly looked up.
"What does that mean?"
Eleanor kept reading.
"Every twenty years, a new person takes the name."
"The Orchard does not die."
"It grows."
Sarah's expression changed.
"That's impossible."
Claire's handwriting continued.
"They recruit judges."
"Lawyers."
"Politicians."
"People with access."
"They don't control the government from outside."
"They grow inside it."
Ross felt cold.
"The maintenance worker..."
Eleanor nodded slowly.
"Samuel Reed."
Sarah turned another page.
Then stopped.
Her face became pale.
"Daniel..."
"What?"
She held up the journal.
"Claire knew."
"She knew about the Harvest."
Ross took the page.
At the bottom was a date.
Three months before Claire disappeared.
And one final sentence.
"The next Harvest will begin when the Whitmore family finds the truth."
Everyone went silent.
Because the date was impossible.
The Harvest had not started recently.
According to Claire...
It had started twenty years ago.
Suddenly...
The lights went out.
Every agent raised their weapons.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Then a sound came from the hallway.
Slow footsteps.
Calm.
Unhurried.
Someone was walking toward them.
Ross whispered,
"Nobody move."
The footsteps stopped outside the bedroom door.
A man's voice came from the darkness.
"Judge Whitmore..."
Eleanor froze.
She knew that voice.
Not from the phone.
Not from any recording.
From somewhere else.
A memory.
A moment she had forgotten.
The voice continued.
"You finally opened the journal."
Ross signaled agents to surround the door.
"Federal agents!"
"Show yourself!"
A quiet laugh answered.
"You still don't understand."
"You keep searching for monsters."
"But monsters are easy to find."
The door slowly opened.
A figure stood in the hallway.
Ordinary.
Gray jacket.
Simple clothes.
A face nobody would remember.
Arthur Bennett's warning echoed in Ross's mind.
"He could walk into any courthouse..."
"...and nobody would remember seeing him."
Eleanor stared.
Her entire body went still.
Because she recognized him.
Not as a criminal.
Not as a stranger.
But as someone who had been standing beside them all along.
Her voice barely escaped.
"No..."
The man smiled.
"Hello, Eleanor."
"You took twenty years to find me."
A pause.
"But you never thought to look at the person who helped you survive."
Ross raised his weapon.
"Who are you?"
The man looked directly at Eleanor.
Then answered calmly.
"I am not the Orchard."
Everyone froze.
The man smiled.
"I am the first branch."
The room went silent.
And Eleanor finally understood.
May you like
They had been chasing the tree...
While the roots were already inside their home.
