Chapter 13 – The First Branch

For several seconds...
Nobody moved.
The man standing in the doorway looked exactly like the kind of person people ignored every day.
No threatening appearance.
No dramatic disguise.
No signs of violence.
Just an ordinary man in a gray jacket.
And that was what terrified Daniel Ross the most.
Because ordinary was exactly what Arthur Bennett had warned them about.
Ross tightened his grip on his weapon.
"Step away from the doorway."
The man smiled.
"Still giving orders."
"After all these years..."
"You haven't changed, Daniel."
Ross's eyes narrowed.
"You know my name."
The man's smile disappeared slightly.
"I know everyone's name."
He looked around the room.
"The question is..."
"How many people know yours?"
The agents surrounding the hallway moved closer.
But Eleanor remained frozen.
She couldn't look away.
Because memories were returning.
A face she had seen hundreds of times.
A voice she had trusted.
A person she never suspected.
"No..."
She whispered again.
The man tilted his head.
"You remember now."
Eleanor's voice shook.
"You were there."
"Yes."
"The night Claire disappeared."
Silence.
Every agent looked at him.
Ross turned sharply.
"What?"
The man stepped into the room.
Slowly.
Calmly.
"I was there."
Eleanor felt the room spinning.
"You knew where she was."
"I knew where everyone was."
"Then why didn't you help her?"
The man's expression remained emotionless.
"Because Claire made a choice."
Eleanor's eyes filled with anger.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I expect you to read the journal."
She looked down.
At the blue leather cover.
At her daughter's handwriting.
The man continued.
"Claire was smarter than anyone realized."
"She discovered the Orchard."
"She discovered the Harvest."
"But she also discovered something more important."
"What?"
He looked directly at Eleanor.
"That destroying the Orchard was impossible."
Ross stepped forward.
"Nothing is impossible."
The man smiled sadly.
"That's exactly what she believed."
"At first."
Sarah slowly opened the journal again.
There was another page hidden behind the last section.
A message written in darker ink.
Not Claire's usual handwriting.
A warning.
"If the Orchard is exposed..."
"Do not attack the branches."
"Find the roots."
Ross looked confused.
"What does that mean?"
The man answered.
"It means Victor Kane was never the enemy."
Everyone turned.
"What?"
The man walked closer.
"Victor was ambitious."
"Corrupt."
"Dangerous."
"But he was also disposable."
Eleanor stared.
"You're saying Victor was a pawn?"
The man nodded.
"The Orchard chooses people like Victor."
"People who want power."
"People who believe they are in control."
"But they never are."
Ross felt anger rising.
"Then who controls it?"
The man looked toward the window.
For the first time...
His calm expression changed.
Fear.
Just for a second.
But everyone saw it.
"The founder."
Nobody spoke.
Sarah whispered,
"The founder?"
The man nodded.
"The person who created the Orchard system."
"When?"
"Almost fifty years ago."
Ross frowned.
"Who?"
The man looked back at them.
"I don't know."
That answer shocked everyone.
"You don't know?"
"No."
"Because nobody knows."
He looked at the journal.
"That's the point."
"The Orchard survives because nobody can find the beginning."
Suddenly, Ross's phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
Unknown sender.
Everyone watched as he opened it.
A photograph.
Noah.
Sitting in a dark room.
Alive.
Unharmed.
But beside him...
Was a second person.
An older woman.
Eleanor gasped.
"No..."
Ross looked at her.
"Who is that?"
Her face turned pale.
"That's..."
She couldn't finish.
The woman in the photograph was someone Eleanor had buried twenty years ago.
Someone who was supposed to be dead.
Her former assistant.
The person who had supposedly died in the same explosion that killed Claire's investigation.
Margaret Ellis.
The woman who destroyed the evidence.
The woman who disappeared.
Sarah looked shocked.
"She's alive?"
Eleanor stared at the picture.
"Impossible."
The man in the gray jacket spoke quietly.
"Not impossible."
"Just hidden."
Ross looked at him.
"Where is Noah?"
The man didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at Eleanor.
"They want you to come alone."
Ross immediately shook his head.
"Absolutely not."
The man continued.
"They know you'll refuse."
"That's why they sent the photograph."
Eleanor looked at Noah's face.
Her grandson.
Scared.
But alive.
"What do they want?"
The man answered.
"The blue journal."
Eleanor tightened her hand around it.
Ross stepped between them.
"No."
"That journal is evidence."
The man nodded.
"And Noah is leverage."
Silence.
Everyone understood.
This was the choice the Orchard wanted.
The same choice Arthur had warned them about.
Family...
Or justice.
Eleanor slowly closed the journal.
For twenty-seven years, she had fought for the law.
She believed justice was stronger than fear.
But now...
The enemy had found the one weakness she couldn't remove.
Her family.
Ross watched her carefully.
"Eleanor."
She didn't respond.
"Don't make this decision alone."
She finally looked at him.
"I have already made too many decisions alone."
Her voice became stronger.
"This started because of me."
Ross shook his head.
"No."
"It started because evil exists."
She looked at the picture again.
"Noah is not a symbol."
"He is not evidence."
"He is a child."
The room became silent.
Then the man in the gray jacket spoke.
"That is why you were chosen."
Eleanor looked at him.
"Chosen for what?"
The man answered softly.
"To prove whether the strongest judge in America..."
"...is still human."
Ten minutes later.
A black vehicle stopped outside the abandoned Philadelphia courthouse.
Eleanor stepped out alone.
No weapon.
No agents.
Only the blue journal in her hand.
Rain fell across the empty street.
The courthouse doors opened automatically.
Waiting inside...
Was Noah.
But he wasn't alone.
A figure stood behind him.
Not the Orchard.
Not the first branch.
Someone older.
Someone Eleanor had not seen in twenty years.
A woman stepped into the light.
"Eleanor."
Her voice trembled.
"I'm sorry."
Eleanor stopped breathing.
Because the woman standing in front of her...
Was the person who had betrayed Claire.
The person who knew the truth.
The person who had been missing for two decades.
Margaret Ellis.
Alive.
And she had one sentence that changed everything.
"Claire didn't disappear."
A pause.
"She escaped."
Eleanor's eyes widened.
"She's alive."
Margaret looked toward the darkness behind her.
"No."
Her face filled with fear.
"She was alive."
A cold silence followed.
May you like
Then Margaret whispered:
"But the Orchard found her first."
