CHAPTER 4 — “THE FACE BEHIND THE DOOR” (ENDING)

The house felt different when I returned.

Not quieter.

Heavier.

Like it knew the truth before I did.

Mark went straight to the study.

I didn’t follow him.

Instead, I went upstairs.

To Lily’s room.

Everything was exactly as she left it.

A blanket half-folded.

A toy on the floor.

A drawing on the desk.

A family.

Three figures.

Me.

Her.

And a blurred shadow standing behind us.

I stared at it for a long time.

Then I heard footsteps behind me.

Mark.

“You shouldn’t be here,” he said softly.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just… tired.

That was worse.

I turned slowly.

“You knew.”

He didn’t deny it.

That was his answer.

The silence between us stretched until it stopped feeling like time.

And started feeling like consequence.

“I didn’t want her involved,” he finally said.

“She wasn’t supposed to be in the way.”

My voice came out barely audible.

“In the way of what?”

Mark looked at me like I should already know.

“Everything we built.”

That was the moment I understood.

The dumpster wasn’t an accident.

It was a cleanup.

But not of a child.

Of evidence.

Sirens echoed faintly again in the distance.

This time—

they weren’t for rescue.

They were coming back for us.

ENDING

Lily survived.

But survival was only the beginning of the truth.

What started as a missing child case became something no one in that neighborhood was ready for—

A marriage built on silence.

A home built on secrets.

And a man who thought love was just another thing he could control.

But in the end…

May you like

the truth doesn’t stay buried.

Not even in a dumpster.
