CHAPTER 2 — “WHAT CHILDREN DON’T SAY OUT LOUD”

At the hospital, white lights replaced the street chaos.
Machines beeped softly.
Lily lay in a small bed too large for her body.
Clean. Safe. Alive.
But silent.
I sat beside her, counting every breath like it was borrowed time.
Mark stood near the window.
“You think this was an accident?” he asked.
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because children don’t just end up in dumpsters.
Not in a quiet neighborhood like ours.
Not wearing pajamas that were folded too neatly… like someone dressed her carefully before throwing her away.
A nurse walked in with a small plastic evidence bag.
Inside it—
A bracelet.
Pink.
With a broken clasp.
Lily’s name written on the back in childish handwriting.
But underneath it—
A second label.
Hospital intake tag.
Wrong timestamp.
My stomach tightened.
“This bracelet wasn’t placed by EMS,” the nurse said quietly.
“It was already recorded in the system… two hours before she was found.”
I looked at Mark.
May you like
For the first time—
He didn’t look back.
