CHAPTER 1 — “THE FIRST HOUR OF TRUTH”

The ambulance lights painted the suburban street in restless red and blue.
I never let go of Lily.
Even when the paramedics tried to take her from my arms.
“She’s not stable,” one of them said.
But I shook my head.
“No. She stays with me.”
My voice didn’t sound like mine anymore.
It sounded like something breaking slowly.
My husband—Mark—stood a few steps away, still holding his phone, still repeating details to the police like a man trying to stay useful instead of falling apart.
Neighbors watched from their porches.
Whispers moved like wind through grass.
And then—
Lily coughed.
Just once.
A fragile, almost impossible sound.
Her fingers twitched against my sleeve.
And everything inside me collapsed into relief and fear at the same time.
The paramedic froze.
“She’s responding.”
But I already knew something was wrong.
