CHAPTER 3 — The Documents

Margaret quietly reached beneath the kitchen cabinet.
With shaking fingers, she pulled out a thick brown envelope.
"I didn't want you worrying while you were overseas."
Ethan frowned.
"What is this?"
She handed him the papers.
As he flipped through them, his face hardened.
There were forged signatures.
Property transfer forms.
Bank authorization requests.
Insurance beneficiary changes.
Every document carried his name.
None of them had been signed by him.
His military deployment dates had been used to make the paperwork appear legitimate.
Vanessa's face drained of color.
"Ethan..."
"I can explain."
He looked directly at her.
"No."
"You can listen."
He removed his military phone from his pocket.
Pressed one number.
"Captain Reynolds."
His commanding officer answered immediately.
"Sergeant Miller."
"Everything okay?"
"No."
"I need military legal assistance."
"And I need local police."
Vanessa's confidence finally shattered.
"You wouldn't report your own wife."
He stared at her.
"The woman I married would never have done this."
"You..."
He looked at the forged signatures again.
"...are someone else."
She suddenly lunged toward the envelope.
Ethan stepped between her and the documents.
"You forged federal military paperwork."
Her knees nearly buckled.
"I was desperate!"
"We had debts!"
"You kept sending money to your mother!"
Margaret looked stunned.
"I never asked for a penny."
Ethan nodded.
"I know."
Vanessa burst into tears.
Not from guilt.
From fear.
Within minutes, flashing red and blue lights reflected through the kitchen windows.
The neighbors watched quietly as police officers entered the home.
May you like
Vanessa left the house in handcuffs.
She never looked back.
