CHAPTER 2 — The Sound of Combat Boots

The bucket slipped from Vanessa's fingers.
Dirty water splashed across the polished white tile, spreading around Margaret's trembling hands.
No one moved.
For several unbearable seconds, the only sound inside the spotless kitchen was the slow drip... drip... drip... of muddy water falling from the overturned bucket.
Ethan stood frozen in the doorway, his camouflage uniform still covered with dust from the military transport that had brought him home only thirty minutes earlier.
He had imagined this moment every night overseas.
He pictured his wife throwing herself into his arms.
His mother crying tears of happiness.
A warm meal.
A peaceful home.
Instead...
His sixty-two-year-old mother was lying on the floor.
Barefoot.
Terrified.
And his wife—the woman he had trusted with everything—was standing over her holding a bucket of filthy water.
His stomach twisted.
Vanessa forced a shaky smile.
"Ethan..."
She took one careful step toward him.
"You're home early."
His expression never changed.
"What."
His voice was almost frighteningly calm.
"...Did I just walk into?"
Vanessa swallowed.
"It isn't what it looks like."
Margaret slowly pushed herself upright, wincing from the slap she'd received only moments earlier.
"Don't..." she whispered.
Her voice cracked.
"Don't fight because of me."
Ethan rushed past Vanessa without looking at her.
He knelt beside his mother.
His combat gloves gently brushed dirt from her cardigan.
His eyes stopped on the red handprint blooming across her cheek.
His breathing changed.
Slow.
Controlled.
Dangerously controlled.
"Who did this?"
Margaret hesitated.
She had protected people her entire life.
Including Vanessa.
But before she could answer—
"I did."
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"I had to."
Ethan slowly stood.
"You had to?"
Vanessa lifted her chin.
"She refused to sign the remaining property papers."
Silence.
"I was only trying to protect our future."
"Our future?"
Ethan stared at her as though she'd become a stranger.
"My mother is seventy pounds lighter than you."
"You knocked her onto the floor."
"You forced her to drink filthy water."
"And you're calling that protecting our future?"
Vanessa's confidence wavered for the first time.
"You don't understand."
"No."
May you like
His jaw tightened.
"I understand perfectly."
