Chapter 5 – Home

Nearly a year later, Richard sold the mansion.

Too many walls remembered too much pain.

They bought a smaller house near a park where Sophie could walk to school.

No grand staircase.

No marble floors.

No locked pantry.

Only sunlight.

Laughter.

And a refrigerator covered with crooked drawings.

One rainy afternoon, Richard found Sophie standing in the kitchen.

She had opened the refrigerator herself.

She chose an apple.

Took a bite without looking around for permission.

Without fear.

Without apologizing.

Richard quietly watched from the doorway.

She noticed him.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

Then she walked over and slipped her small hand into his.

"I know you're here now."

His eyes filled with tears.

"So am I."

Years later, Sophie would remember very little about the mansion.

She wouldn't remember the expensive furniture.

Or the luxury cars.

Or the endless rooms.

She would remember something far more valuable.

The day her father finally saw her.

Because healing didn't begin when the court ruled in their favor.

It began the moment one frightened little girl realized she never had to earn love again.

The End.
