Chapter 2 – Hidden Evidence

By afternoon, Sophie sat quietly inside the pediatric examination room.
The doctor remained unusually silent while documenting bruises, dehydration, and early signs of malnutrition.
Richard's hands trembled.
"There are older injuries," the physician said gently.
"They weren't accidents."
The words refused to leave his mind.
Older injuries.
That meant this had been happening while he believed his daughter was safe.
The school counselor arrived later that evening carrying a small plastic bag.
Inside were dozens of stale crackers.
Half-eaten granola bars.
Apple slices wrapped in napkins.
Richard stared in disbelief.
"Sophie hides food almost every day," the counselor admitted.
"We thought she was worried about another child going hungry."
She wasn't.
She was preparing for herself.
Then came another knock.
An elderly woman introduced herself.
"My name is Margaret."
Richard recognized her immediately.
Sophie's former nanny.
The woman he had allowed Vanessa to dismiss nearly a year earlier.
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
"I tried to tell you."
May you like
Richard couldn't answer.
"You stopped hearing me the day you started believing her."
