Chapter 1 – The Silence That Broke Him

Richard Carter hadn't cried since his wife died.

Not at the funeral.
Not when he buried the woman who had promised to grow old beside him.
Not even during the endless nights afterward when the mansion echoed with memories instead of laughter.

But watching his seven-year-old daughter pick pieces of dry dog food from a stainless-steel bowl shattered something inside him.

He crouched slowly until they were eye level.

"Sophie..."

She immediately lowered her head.

"I'm sorry."

Those two words hit him harder than anything else.

She wasn't apologizing for eating dog food.

She was apologizing for getting caught.

Richard wrapped his jacket around her tiny shoulders before lifting her into his arms. Sophie stiffened at first, as though expecting punishment, then slowly relaxed.

She hadn't felt safe in months.

When Vanessa entered the kitchen carrying her morning coffee, she barely glanced at the child.

"I see she found the pantry."

Richard looked at her.

"What happened?"

Vanessa shrugged.

"Children need consequences."

"You starved her."

"I disciplined her."

The room became impossibly quiet.

Richard had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions without raising his voice.

Now he could barely breathe.

He simply said,

"Leave."

Vanessa frowned.

"Richard—"

"I said leave."

For the first time since they met, there was no affection in his eyes.

Only disappointment.
