CHAPTER 3 — Ashes of an Empire

By the next morning, Damian Carter had become the biggest story on Wall Street.

Financial networks replayed the footage of his removal from Voss Global over and over.

"CEO Ousted in Stunning Corporate Shake-Up."

"Mystery Founder Reclaims Multi-Billion-Dollar Empire."

"Who Is Elena Voss?"

The world wanted answers.

Elena gave none.

Inside Voss Global headquarters, the atmosphere had changed overnight.

Employees who once walked the halls in silence now spoke openly.

Office doors that had always remained closed were left open.

For the first time in years, people looked relieved.

Elena stepped into the executive conference room.

No dramatic entrance.

No celebration.

Only business.

"The restructuring begins today," she said.

The board members waited.

"No layoffs."

Several executives exchanged surprised glances.

"What about the divisions that reported directly to Damian?" one director asked.

"We rebuild them."

"And the executives who covered for him?"

Elena closed the folder in front of her.

"They answer for their decisions."

Her words were calm.

But final.

Across the city, Damian sat alone inside a luxury hotel suite that no longer belonged to him.

The bank had frozen every account.

His lawyer entered carrying three folders.

"You should prepare yourself."

Damian didn't respond.

"The Securities Commission has opened an investigation."

Another folder landed on the table.

"The tax authorities are requesting records."

Another.

"Several former executives are cooperating."

Damian rubbed his face.

"They're saving themselves."

"They're telling the truth."

For the first time in years...

No one was protecting him.

Late that evening, Elena remained alone in her office.

The city lights reflected across the glass walls.

Her assistant knocked softly.

"There's someone here to see you."

"I don't have any appointments."

"He says it's about your father."

Elena looked up immediately.

"My father passed away twenty years ago."

"I know."

The assistant hesitated.

"But he insists."

A gray-haired man entered carrying a weathered leather briefcase.

"My name is Arthur Greene."

"I was your father's attorney."

Elena frowned.

"My father never mentioned you."

"He couldn't."

Arthur placed an old sealed envelope on her desk.

"He asked me to deliver this only after you took back the company."

The handwriting on the envelope was unmistakable.

Her father's.

She slowly opened it.

Inside was a single handwritten sentence.

Trust no one who profits from my silence.

Beneath it...

One unfamiliar name.

Blackridge Consortium.

Elena's expression changed for the first time that day.

Something far bigger than Damian had just revealed itself.
