CHAPTER 2 — The Woman Behind the Empire

Damian's phone vibrated nonstop.

One notification after another flooded the screen.

ACCOUNT SUSPENDED.

BOARD VOTE INITIATED.

EXECUTIVE ACCESS REVOKED.

He stared at the display as if refusing to believe what his own eyes were telling him.

"This... this has to be some kind of mistake."

No one answered.

The boardroom had fallen completely silent.

Every executive avoided looking at him.

Every face in the room had changed.

Minutes ago, Damian Carter had been the most powerful man in the building.

Now...

No one seemed willing to stand beside him.

Across the room, Elena calmly accepted the folder the CEO handed her.

She didn't even open it.

She already knew what was inside.

"The transfer of voting rights has been completed," the CEO announced.

"Effective immediately, Ms. Elena Voss resumes full executive authority over Voss Global Holdings."

A quiet murmur spread across the room.

Several directors stood up.

Not for Damian.

For Elena.

One by one...

They applauded.

Damian looked around in disbelief.

"You knew?"

No one answered.

"You all knew?"

An older board member finally spoke.

"We always worked for Ms. Voss."

Damian's face drained of color.

"I was CEO."

"You were appointed CEO," the director corrected.

"There is a difference."

Veronica stepped forward, her voice shaking.

"This is insane!"

She pointed at Elena.

"She was standing outside five minutes ago looking like she needed help."

Elena slowly turned toward her.

"I did need help."

Veronica blinked.

"What?"

"I wanted to know who would offer it."

The room became even quieter.

Elena dabbed the small cut on her lip with a white handkerchief.

"You both assumed kindness was weakness."

She folded the cloth neatly.

"That assumption was expensive."

Damian slammed both hands onto the conference table.

"You manipulated me!"

For the first time...

Elena's expression hardened.

"No."

"I gave you complete authority."

"You abused it."

"You promoted people who praised you."

"You silenced people who questioned you."

"You called loyal employees 'expenses.'"

"And today..."

She paused.

"You proved every concern I ever had."

Damian opened his mouth...

But no words came.

The CEO cleared his throat.

"There is one remaining item."

He placed another document on the table.

"A forensic audit."

Damian frowned.

"What audit?"

"The one Ms. Voss authorized six months ago."

His heart skipped.

Six months.

Before today's meeting.

Before the confrontation.

Before everything.

Elena had already begun looking for answers.

The company's chief legal officer entered with two investigators.

"Mr. Carter," one of them said politely.

"We need your company laptop, phone, and office keys."

Damian laughed nervously.

"You can't seriously think I'm handing over anything."

The investigator slid a warrant across the table.

"We're not asking."

For several long seconds...

No one moved.

Finally...

Damian removed his company badge.

He placed it on the polished conference table.

The sound echoed through the silent room.

It sounded...

Like the end of an era.

As security escorted Damian toward the door, he stopped beside Elena.

He lowered his voice.

"You'll regret this."

Elena met his eyes without flinching.

"No."

She spoke so quietly that only he could hear.

"I'll finally sleep."

The elevator doors closed behind him.

For the first time in fifteen years...

May you like

Damian Carter walked out of Voss Global...

As a stranger.
