CHAPTER 4 THE GRANDDAUGHTER WHO CAME HOME

The scandal rocked the Whitmore family.

Margaret resigned from every charity board.

Every social organization.

Every public position.

People who once admired her suddenly saw the truth.

Arthur filed for divorce.

Not because he hated her.

Because trust had died.

Some betrayals cannot be repaired.

Weeks later, Arthur visited Elena's grave.

Nora stood beside him.

Neither spoke for a long time.

Finally Arthur placed a white rose on the headstone.

"I'm sorry."

His voice broke.

"I should have found you."

The wind moved softly through the cemetery.

Nora touched the silver locket.

The same locket that had changed everything.

"My mother never hated you."

Arthur looked at her.

"How do you know?"

Nora smiled through tears.

"Because she kept your picture beside her bed until the day she died."

Arthur began crying.

The kind of tears eighteen years overdue.

Months passed.

Nora left the servant quarters.

Arthur insisted she move into the mansion.

Not as staff.

As family.

For the first time in her life, she had her own room.

Her own future.

Her own place at the table.

One evening they sat together in the kitchen.

The same kitchen where she had once hidden on the floor eating leftovers.

Arthur placed a plate in front of her.

A real dinner.

Prepared by the mansion chef.

Nora laughed softly.

"You know what's funny?"

"What?"

"The first time you found me here, I thought you were going to fire me."

Arthur smiled.

"I thought I had lost my daughter forever."

Silence settled between them.

Not painful silence.

Peaceful silence.

Then Arthur reached across the table and squeezed her hand.

"You didn't just bring Elena home."

Nora's eyes filled with tears.

"What do you mean?"

Arthur smiled.

"You brought this family home too."

For the first time in years, Whitmore Manor felt warm again.

And the girl who once ate scraps on the kitchen floor finally understood something.

She had never been a servant in that house.

May you like

She had always been family.

THE END.
