CHAPTER 2 THE WOMAN WHO FEARED THE LOCKET

Arthur Whitmore froze.

Only one person would have made Elena say those words.

And that person was still living inside the mansion.

His wife.

Margaret Whitmore.

For eighteen years, Margaret had insisted Elena ran away.

She claimed their daughter chose a man over her family.

She claimed Elena never wanted to come home.

Arthur had believed her.

Because grief makes people cling to explanations.

Even bad ones.

"Nora," Arthur said quietly, "come with me."

Nora hesitated.

Every instinct screamed at her to run.

Her mother had spent her entire life preparing her for this moment.

If anyone recognizes the locket, run.

Yet something in Arthur's eyes stopped her.

He wasn't looking at her like a servant.

He was looking at her like family.

Minutes later they entered Arthur's private study.

Photographs covered the walls.

Business awards.

Family portraits.

Then Nora saw her.

A young woman smiling beside a lake.

Long dark hair.

Gentle eyes.

The silver locket hanging around her neck.

Nora's knees nearly gave out.

"Mom."

Arthur stared at the photo.

"Elena was twenty-one when she disappeared."

Nora slowly approached the picture.

"She never disappeared."

Arthur looked at her.

"What?"

Nora swallowed.

"My mother died two years ago."

The words shattered the room.

Arthur collapsed into a chair.

His daughter had not abandoned him.

She had survived.

Lived.

Loved.

Raised a child.

And died believing she could never come home.

Suddenly the study door burst open.

Margaret Whitmore stood there.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect posture.

Perfect smile.

Until she saw Nora.

Then the smile vanished.

The color drained from her face.

The locket.

She recognized it instantly.

And for the first time in eighteen years...

Margaret Whitmore looked terrified.
