CHAPTER 3 THE LIE THAT STOLE EIGHTEEN YEARS

"Get out."

Margaret's voice shook.

Arthur slowly stood.

"No."

Margaret's eyes never left Nora.

"You don't understand."

Arthur's expression darkened.

"No. I finally do."

The confrontation lasted for hours.

By midnight the truth emerged.

Eighteen years earlier, Elena had fallen in love with a young mechanic named Daniel Brooks.

He wasn't wealthy.

He wasn't connected.

He wasn't acceptable.

Margaret despised him.

When Elena became pregnant, Margaret saw an opportunity.

She forged documents.

Intercepted letters.

Lied to both Elena and Arthur.

She convinced Elena that her father never wanted to see her again.

Then she convinced Arthur that Elena had willingly abandoned the family.

Two lives destroyed by one woman's obsession with status.

Arthur sat in silence.

Every year.

Every birthday.

Every Christmas.

Every moment of grief.

Built on a lie.

Margaret finally broke.

"I was protecting this family!"

Arthur slammed his fist onto the desk.

"You destroyed it."

Nora watched in shock.

Everything her mother had suffered suddenly made sense.

The fear.

The constant moving.

The loneliness.

The warnings.

Then Arthur looked at Nora.

Tears filled his eyes.

"She tried to come home, didn't she?"

Nora nodded.

"Many times."

Arthur covered his face.

Because every letter Elena wrote had been hidden.

Every phone call blocked.

May you like

Every attempt erased.

And the woman responsible had been sitting beside him at the dinner table for eighteen years.
