Chapter 4 - VANESSA’S FATHER

Victor Cole arrived before the police.

That told Daniel more than anything.

Vanessa had not called him from the foyer.

At least not where anyone saw.

Yet less than thirty minutes after security locked down the house, a black Bentley stopped outside.

Victor entered with two attorneys.

He did not ask whether Vanessa was all right.

He looked immediately at the television.

The frozen security image still showed his daughter placing the necklace inside Emily’s handbag.

Victor’s jaw tightened.

Then he noticed the trust document on the console.

His expression changed.

“Where did that come from?”

Daniel answered.

“My father’s records.”

Victor looked at Emily.

“You stole confidential material?”

Daniel stepped between them.

“She copied a document addressed to her.”

Victor smiled without warmth.

“She is household staff.”

Emily had heard that tone her entire adult life.

The tone wealthy people used when they believed someone’s job described the boundaries of her humanity.

Margaret stood.

“Her mother helped create the company you’re trying to merge with.”

Victor looked at Margaret.

“Grace Carter was a bookkeeper.”

Margaret’s eyes narrowed.

“She saved Henry from bankruptcy.”

Victor smiled.

“Family stories become generous after people die.”

Emily watched him.

He was too defensive.

Too fast.

Then Daniel asked.

“Did you know about the eighteen percent?”

Victor did not answer.

His attorney stepped forward.

“We should not discuss pending transaction matters in front of employees.”

Daniel laughed.

“She’s not just an employee anymore, apparently.”

That sentence changed the room.

Emily wished it did not.

She had spent years being invisible.

Now people were staring at her because paper suddenly made her valuable.

It did not feel like respect.

It felt like appraisal.

Detective Laura Bennett arrived with two officers.

She viewed the CCTV.

Examined the necklace.

Took statements.

Vanessa insisted the necklace had accidentally fallen into the bag.

Nobody believed her.

Detective Bennett asked the simplest question.

“Why did you slap Emily?”

Vanessa stared at the floor.

“She insulted me.”

“What did she say?”

Silence.

Emily answered.

“I said I wanted Mr. Daniel to see the camera footage before anyone called me a thief.”

Vanessa’s story collapsed further.

Then Bennett asked.

“Who removed the necklace from the safe?”

Vanessa claimed she did not remember.

Security logs did.

Margaret’s safe required a code.

The system recorded one successful entry at 5:42 p.m.

Code assigned to Margaret.

But Margaret had been downstairs greeting guests.

Someone else knew the number.

Vanessa looked toward Victor.

Only once.

Barely a second.

Detective Bennett noticed.

So did Daniel.

“What?”

Daniel asked.

Vanessa said nothing.

Victor’s face hardened.

Then Margaret whispered.

“I gave that code to Victor last year.”

Everyone turned.

“Why?”

Daniel asked.

Margaret looked embarrassed.

“Estate planning.”

Victor closed his eyes.

The necklace theft suddenly connected not only to Vanessa.

It connected to her father.
