Chapter 10 - THE SECOND TRUST
Henry had created another trust.
Not for money.
For control.
The Ashbourne Continuity Trust held a special fifteen-percent voting block that activated only if company leadership became compromised by fraud.
For seven years, the block remained dormant.
The successor trustee had never been publicly named.
Daniel assumed it was him.
It was not.
Margaret assumed it was an independent bank.
Wrong again.
Henry named Grace Carter.
If Grace died before activation, control passed to her legal heir.
Emily.
Eighteen percent personal beneficial interest.
Plus temporary authority over fifteen percent continuity shares.
If activated, Emily could control thirty-three percent of Ashbourne voting power.
Enough to block almost anything.
Including the merger.
Margaret stared at the trust instrument.
“Henry never told me.”
Daniel looked at Emily.
“Neither did your mother.”
Emily laughed bitterly.
“Apparently, everyone in this family protected people by hiding things.”
Nobody argued.
The trust required proof of significant internal fraud before activation.
The Grace ledgers provided it.
Nathan’s payments provided more.
The board’s independent committee voted.
Four to three.
Activate.
Emily became the most powerful single voting block in Ashbourne Holdings overnight.
She did not feel powerful.
She felt overwhelmed.
Twenty-four hours earlier, she had been laundering guest linens.
Now lawyers asked how she intended to vote on billion-dollar transactions.
Vanessa called her directly.
Emily almost ignored it.
Then answered with Detective Bennett recording.
“You got what you wanted.”
Vanessa said.
“No.”
Emily replied.
“I wanted you to stop calling me a thief.”
“You think Daniel respects you now?”
“This isn’t about Daniel.”
“It always is.”
Vanessa’s voice sharpened.
“You have no idea how that family works.”
“Neither did you.”
Silence.
Then Vanessa said.
“My father will destroy you before he lets you take that company.”
Emily’s blood went cold.
“Is that what he told my mother too?”
Vanessa stopped.
For three seconds, neither woman spoke.
Emily whispered.
“You know something.”
“No.”
“You hesitated.”
Vanessa hung up.
Detective Bennett immediately requested phone records.
They showed Vanessa had visited her father’s private office the day before framing Emily.
For nearly three hours.
Security camera footage showed her leaving with a document envelope.
The same evening, she accessed Margaret’s jewelry safe.
Then a search warrant uncovered handwritten notes in Vanessa’s apartment.
One page contained Emily’s birthday.
Another.
18% VESTS.
Another.
CONTINUITY TRUST?
Then.
IF E. IS REMOVED BEFORE 30, DELAY EVERYTHING.
The necklace plan had been fully intentional.
But one line mattered more.
DAD SAYS GRACE MADE SAME MISTAKE.

“What mistake?”
