Chapter 1 - THE CAMERA DID NOT BLINK

Vanessa’s face turned white before anyone in the foyer said another word.
The black-and-white security footage remained frozen on the television screen.
There she was.
The fitted black dress.
The diamond necklace in her hand.
Emily’s brown leather handbag open on the marble floor.
Then the unmistakable movement.
Vanessa bending down.
Vanessa placing the necklace inside.
Vanessa closing the bag.
Daniel stood beneath the chandelier with the remote in his hand.
He looked from the television to Vanessa.
“You framed her.”
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Margaret Ashbourne still had one hand over her lips.
Only a minute earlier, she had been staring at Emily as if the young housekeeper had betrayed the family.
Now shame slowly replaced suspicion.
Emily said nothing.
Her cheek still burned from the single slap.
She kept one palm against it.
Her eyes remained lowered.
Daniel noticed.
He walked toward Vanessa.
“Why?”
Vanessa finally found her voice.
“It isn’t what it looks like.”
Daniel laughed once.
Coldly.
“It looks like you stole my mother’s necklace, put it in Emily’s bag, accused her of theft, and hit her.”
“I did not steal it.”
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“You removed it from my safe without permission.”
Vanessa turned quickly.
“I was trying to prove something.”
“What?”
Daniel asked.
Vanessa looked at Emily.
That was the moment Emily understood.
Vanessa was not afraid of the camera.
She was afraid of Emily.
Daniel saw it too.
“What are you hiding?”
Vanessa stepped backward.
“Nothing.”
Daniel turned toward the head of security.
“Save every camera angle from tonight.”
“Already done.”
“Lock the original footage.”
“Yes, sir.”
Vanessa’s voice sharpened.
“You’re treating me like a criminal over a stupid necklace.”
Margaret stared at her.
“The Ashbourne Star is insured for two point eight million dollars.”
The room went silent again.
Several guests moved farther away from Vanessa.
The necklace suddenly looked less like family jewelry and more like evidence.
Daniel pointed toward the foyer doors.
“You are not leaving until security determines whether anything else is missing.”
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“You can’t keep me here.”
“No.”
Daniel replied.
“But the police can decide whether you leave with my mother’s property.”
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“You would call police on me?”
Daniel looked toward Emily.
Her eyes were still wet.
“You called her a thief in front of twenty people.”
“You hit her.”
“And the camera proved she did nothing.”
Then Emily finally spoke.
“Mr. Ashbourne.”
Daniel turned.
“There’s something I need to tell you.”
Vanessa’s expression changed instantly.
“No.”
Emily looked at her.
Vanessa rushed forward.
“Don’t listen to her.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“Emily.”
“What?”
Emily swallowed.
“The necklace isn’t why she wanted me fired.”
Vanessa froze.
Margaret stared at Emily.
“What do you mean?”
Emily reached slowly into the pocket of her gray housekeeping uniform.
She removed a small brass key.
“I found this three days ago.”
Vanessa whispered.
“You had no right.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You know what that key opens?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Emily closed her fingers around it.
“Yes.”
May you like
She whispered.
“She does.”
