Chapter 2 – The Missing Instructions

The dining room erupted into controlled chaos.

A butler rushed to unlock the front doors for the arriving paramedics while another escorted Victoria Langford to a sofa, where she struggled for every breath. The luxurious silence that normally defined Langford House had been replaced by hurried footsteps and clipped medical commands.

Emma Collins stood frozen beside the table.

"I didn't change anything," she whispered, more to herself than anyone else.

No one answered.

Every pair of eyes seemed to settle on her black uniform.

Victoria pointed a trembling finger in Emma's direction.

"She... served it..."

Emma swallowed hard.

"I served exactly what the kitchen prepared."

Across the room, Noah Bennett ignored the accusations.

Instead, he spread both order slips across the polished walnut table.

At first glance they appeared identical.

Same entrée.

Same table number.

Same time stamp.

Then he noticed it.

One copy contained a handwritten note in blue ink.

NO TREE NUTS – SEVERE ALLERGY. SUBSTITUTE ALMOND SAUCE WITH HERB BUTTER.

The second copy—sent to the kitchen printer—contained no allergy warning at all.

Someone had deliberately removed it.

Chef Marco Rossi leaned over Noah's shoulder.

His experienced eyes narrowed.

"My sous-chef never received this version."

He pointed to the kitchen copy.

"If he had, this plate would never have left my kitchen."

Emma slowly looked up.

"So someone changed it... after Mrs. Langford ordered."

Marco nodded.

"And before my staff ever saw it."

The room became quiet.

This wasn't negligence.

It was sabotage.
