Hawthorne Residential renovated it.
Removed the dark marble.
Opened the kitchen.
Replaced the grand piano.
Three years after the sale, Daniel found himself inside the building for a business meeting.
The elevator stopped on sixty-one.
A family entered.
Two children.
Parents.
A dog.
The little girl pressed the button.
Daniel stared at the hallway leading toward his old home.
For one insane second, he wanted to walk down it.
He didn’t.
That apartment belonged to someone else.
Maybe it always had.
Later that night, he emailed Rebecca.

She did not answer immediately.
The next morning, she replied.

It no longer mattered.
His growth was not her assignment.
