Chapter 13 - The Company Removed His Name
Mercer Global held an emergency shareholder vote.
Daniel still owned forty-two percent.
That mattered.
He could not simply be erased.
But he could be removed from management.
The investigation found enough undisclosed related-party transactions to justify permanent termination as CEO.
The vote passed.
Daniel Mercer was out.
Then came another question.
The company name.
Mercer Global Logistics.
Daniel argued changing it would destroy brand value.
Marcus disagreed.
The scandal had already damaged the brand.
Rebecca surprised everyone.
“Do not change it yet.”
Marcus looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because this company is bigger than Daniel.”
“Employees built it.”
“Clients built it.”
“Twenty-seven years built it.”
“I don’t want to pretend history disappears because the founder failed.”
Daniel heard about that statement through the board minutes.
He called Rebecca.
“You defended my name.”
“No.”
“I defended the company.”
“It’s the same thing.”
Rebecca smiled sadly.
“That is exactly what you never understood.”
Eventually, Mercer Global remained.
But governance changed.
Independent chair.
New audit controls.
Strict related-party rules.
Rebecca accepted a temporary board seat.
Not CEO.
Not executive chair.
She had no desire to replace Daniel.
That confused him.
He had always assumed power was the goal because power was his goal.
Rebecca wanted protection.
