Chapter 4 – What the Cameras Didn't Show

The trial lasted eleven days.
Vanessa insisted she had entered the staff office by coincidence.
She claimed someone else planted the brooch afterward.
Then Daniel testified.
He never raised his voice.
He simply explained procedures.
Evidence.
Timing.
Chain of custody.
Facts.
Facts proved stronger than performances.
Then came the surprise witness.
A janitor named Miguel Ortiz.
Quiet.
Nearly invisible.
He almost hadn't reported what he saw.
"I thought it wasn't important."
The courtroom listened.
"I saw Ms. Vale leave the staff office."
"What made you remember?"
Miguel reached into his pocket.
He unfolded a tiny receipt.
She had asked him where the trash room was.
He had written directions on the back.
The timestamp—
8:10 PM.
Exactly when she entered Amelia's office.
One minute later...
She no longer had the receipt.
It had been thrown away.
Recovered during the investigation.
Still carrying traces of velvet fibers matching the jewelry box.
Vanessa lowered her head.
For the first time...
She had no explanation.
The jury returned after less than four hours.
Guilty.
Insurance fraud.
Evidence tampering.
False accusation.
Obstruction.
As deputies led Vanessa away, she looked once toward Amelia.
"You ruined my life."
Amelia answered softly,
"No."
"You tried to ruin mine."
Outside the courthouse, reporters crowded the sidewalk.
Microphones stretched toward Amelia.
"Do you forgive her?"
She thought for a long moment.
Then shook her head.
"Forgiveness isn't pretending something never happened."
She glanced toward the museum across the street.
"It's deciding she doesn't get to decide who I become."
May you like
Daniel smiled quietly.
It was the first time Amelia had seen him smile.
