Chapter 3 – The Woman Who Planned Everything

The investigation uncovered something no one expected.
Vanessa hadn't chosen Amelia at random.
She had known exactly who she was.
Officer Brooks searched months of museum records.
Emails.
Visitor logs.
Volunteer schedules.
One forgotten message surfaced.
Eight months earlier.
Subject line:
Employment Recommendation — Amelia Hart
The sender...
Vanessa Vale.
Arthur stared at the screen.
"She recommended Amelia?"
Amelia looked equally confused.
"I've never spoken to her before tonight."
Daniel leaned closer.
"Read it."
Arthur did.
"Amelia Hart appears diligent, trustworthy, and would make an excellent addition to the museum archives."
No one understood.
Until Brooks discovered the attachment.
The recommendation hadn't been written by Vanessa.
It had been forged.
Someone had used her business letterhead.
Daniel slowly pieced it together.
"She wanted Amelia hired."
Arthur looked horrified.
"So she'd have someone to blame."
The museum archives revealed another coincidence.
Or perhaps...
Not a coincidence.
Every valuable object temporarily loaned by the March family had been handled by Amelia during cataloging.
Every one.
Vanessa had arranged it.
Months.
Planning.
Waiting.
Building trust.
Creating the perfect suspect.
Then Daniel found the financial records.
Vanessa's investment company had quietly purchased insurance policies tied to several privately owned historical collections.
If Evelyn's ruby brooch disappeared permanently...
Someone would receive nearly twelve million dollars.
Not Evelyn.
Not the museum.
Vanessa's shell corporation.
Arthur whispered,
"My God..."
Officer Brooks nodded.
"This wasn't theft."
"It was insurance fraud."
"And Amelia was supposed to take the fall."
Vanessa finally stopped smiling.
"I want my lawyer."
Brooks answered,
"You'll have one."
She paused.
"But first..."
She placed printed screenshots onto the table.
Hallway footage.
Phone records.
Bank transfers.
A receipt for an identical black velvet jewelry box purchased two weeks earlier.
Vanessa stared.
Daniel watched quietly.
Then he placed one final photograph beside the others.
The fingerprint report.

The clearest print...
Belonged to Vanessa.
