Chapter 2 – The Fingerprints No One Expected

Silence settled over the marble hall like dust after an explosion.

Daniel remained kneeling beside the open bag, his gloved hands motionless.

"No one leaves."

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Surely you're not suggesting I stay here after catching a thief."

"I'm suggesting," Daniel replied evenly, "that we preserve a crime scene."

Arthur looked from the brooch to Amelia. His shoulders sagged beneath decades of professional pride.

"The police..."

"They're already on their way."

Daniel had pressed the emergency security button beneath his sleeve the moment the velvet box appeared.

Vanessa's smile flickered.

"You called them before asking anyone?"

"I called them because evidence deserves witnesses."

Officer Lena Brooks arrived twenty-two minutes later with the museum's forensic technician.

The brooch remained untouched.

Every photograph, every footprint, every broken piece of crystal was documented.

Amelia stood against the wall, her soaked blouse beginning to dry stiff against her skin.

She hadn't moved.

She barely breathed.

The technician carefully lifted the velvet box.

"No visible prints on the exterior."

He examined the brooch.

"Interesting..."

Daniel looked up.

"What?"

"There are partial fingerprints on the platinum stem."

Vanessa folded her arms tighter.

"Obviously Amelia handled it."

The technician shook his head.

"Not necessarily."

He continued dusting.

"Actually..."

Everyone watched.

"We've got multiple prints."

Officer Brooks asked quietly,

"Whose?"

"We'll compare them."

Vanessa laughed softly.

"This is becoming dramatic."

Daniel answered without looking at her.

"It already was."

While the evidence was being packaged, Daniel walked toward the security office.

"I need every hallway camera."

Arthur frowned.

"The staff office camera has been broken for months."

"I know."

"But the hallway outside it works."

Arthur froze.

Daniel continued,

"Anyone entering that office passed the hallway."

Vanessa's expression changed for the first time that evening.

Only for a second.

But Amelia saw it.

Fear.

Tiny.

Almost invisible.

Three hours later the footage began playing.

7:48 PM.

Amelia entered the office carrying inventory folders.

She left two minutes later.

7:56 PM.

A catering employee passed by.

8:03 PM.

A museum volunteer.

8:09 PM.

Nothing.

8:11 PM.

Vanessa appeared.

Elegant.

Calm.

She looked once over each shoulder before disappearing into the staff office.

Arthur leaned closer.

"How long was she inside?"

Daniel fast-forwarded.

One minute.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Finally—

Vanessa emerged carrying only her silver clutch.

She smiled at someone off-camera before returning to the gala.

No one spoke.

Officer Brooks finally asked,

"Why were you in the staff office, Ms. Vale?"

Vanessa answered immediately.

"I was looking for the restroom."

Daniel stopped the video.

"The restroom is downstairs."

No answer came.

Only silence.

Amelia closed her eyes.

May you like

For the first time that night...

Someone else looked guilty.
