Chapter 7 β The Woman Behind the Power
Months passed after the night at the ballroom.
The city slowly moved on, but Vivian Ashcroft's life had changed completely.
The Ashcroft Foundation was no longer under her control. She remained wealthy, but for the first time, money could not solve the problem in front of her.
Her reputation had been damaged.
Her relationships had become distant.
And the people who once surrounded her because of her influence were suddenly nowhere to be found.
One afternoon, Vivian visited the Whitmore Foundation.
The staff members became quiet when they saw her enter.
She looked different.
Not powerless.
But tired.
Daniel stepped out of his office.
"I didn't expect to see you here."
Vivian looked uncomfortable.
"I need to speak with Eleanor."
Daniel studied her carefully.
"Why?"
She hesitated.
Because admitting the truth was harder than any public criticism.
"I was wrong."
The words sounded unfamiliar.
Daniel led her to Eleanor's office.
The elderly woman looked up from her papers.
For a moment, neither woman spoke.
Finally, Vivian lowered her eyes.
"I treated you like you were invisible."
Eleanor remained silent.
"I thought my name made me important. I thought everyone else existed to serve people like me."
Her voice became quieter.
"I was wrong."
Eleanor looked at her for a long moment.
"Do you know what the hardest part of changing is?"
Vivian shook her head.
"Accepting that the person who hurt others was also you."
The words were painful.
But Vivian did not walk away.
