Chapter 5 β The Hidden History

A week later, Daniel invited Emily to the Whitmore Foundation's main office.
She arrived nervous.
"I hope I didn't do something wrong."
Daniel smiled.
"Actually, you did something very right."
He handed her a small folder.
Inside were documents about a community program Eleanor had started years ago.
A program that provided meals, education, and support for elderly people living alone.
"Why are you showing me this?"
"Because Eleanor wants you involved."
Emily looked surprised.
"Me?"
Daniel nodded.
"She believes people who protect others deserve opportunities to protect even more."
Emily touched the folder carefully.
She had spent most of her life being told what she couldn't become.
She was just a maid.
Just a worker.
Just someone standing behind the scenes.
But Eleanor saw something different.
That evening, Vivian received another piece of news.
Several members of the Ashcroft Foundation board wanted a meeting.
Her actions at the gala had damaged their reputation, and donors were asking questions.
Vivian blamed everyone except herself.
The staff.
The media.
Daniel.
Even Eleanor.
"She set me up," Vivian said.
Her lawyer remained silent.
Because everyone in the room knew the truth.
Nobody had destroyed Vivian Ashcroft's image.
She had revealed it herself.
The person she had underestimated the most was not Daniel Whitmore.

Not Eleanor.
It was the quiet maid she believed nobody would defend.
