Chapter 1 – The Woman in the Wheelchair

The ballroom glittered beneath crystal chandeliers, every polished surface reflecting wealth that seemed almost unreal. Waiters moved silently between tables dressed in white linen while a string quartet played softly from the marble balcony.
Emily Carter had worked enough charity galas to know that expensive smiles rarely meant kind hearts.
She was adjusting the blanket across an elderly guest's lap when the room suddenly shifted.
"Move."
The voice cut through the music.
Vivian Ashcroft—wrapped in a designer gown that shimmered like liquid gold—strode across the ballroom with the certainty of someone who had never heard the word no. Without slowing, she shoved the wheelchair blocking her path.
The chair lurched toward the marble staircase.
Emily reacted before she could think.
She grabbed the handles with both hands, her shoes sliding against the polished floor as she stopped the chair inches from disaster.
Gasps echoed around them.
Vivian stared at the maid as though she were an inconvenience.
"How dare you touch me?" she snapped.
Emily's pulse pounded inside her ears.
"I was trying to protect her."
Vivian laughed—a sharp, humorless sound.
"Protect her? Do you even know who I am?"
The question hung in the silence.
Emily looked down at the elderly woman.
She hadn't spoken a single word since arriving. Her silver hair was neatly pinned beneath a small hat, and her hands rested calmly on an elegant wooden cane.
There was no fear in her eyes.
Only quiet observation.
Across the ballroom, a tall man in a white dinner jacket lowered his champagne glass.
He had witnessed every second.

And unlike everyone else, he wasn't watching Vivian.
He was watching the woman in the wheelchair.
