Chapter 9 - Daniel’s Secret

Emily wanted to leave.

Daniel blocked the doorway.

“Please.”

She stared at him.

“Move.”

“I was involved.”

The words stopped her.

Vanessa looked surprised.

Daniel continued.

“When my father died, the company was collapsing.”

“I know.”

“I found accounts I didn’t understand.”

Samuel interrupted.

“You understood enough.”

Daniel looked at him.

“I was twenty.”

Samuel said nothing.

Daniel turned back to Emily.

“I used money from one of the hidden accounts to save three properties.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“So your empire started with stolen money.”

“Yes.”

The admission landed heavily.

“But I stopped.”

“When?”

“Two years later.”

“Why?”

“Because I learned where the money came from.”

Daniel looked at the ledger.

His father had stolen from employee pensions.

Family trusts.

Charitable foundations.

Including Clara’s trust.

Emily’s.

Daniel had unknowingly used part of that stolen money.

Then knowingly hidden the origin after discovering it.

“You could have returned it.”

“I should have.”

“You didn’t.”

“No.”

Emily looked at him differently now.

The man who exposed Vanessa had his own secrets.

Daniel had spent years building a respectable life on top of something rotten.

Vanessa smiled.

“Welcome to the family.”

Emily turned on her.

“You don’t get to enjoy this.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“You framed an innocent woman because you wanted power.”

Emily pointed at Daniel.

“And he hid stolen money because he wanted power.”

She looked around the room.

“You’re not different.”

Daniel flinched.

Samuel spoke quietly.

“Emily.”

She turned.

“There is one more thing.”

He opened the ledger to the final page.

A handwritten note appeared.

Clara’s handwriting.

DANIEL DIDN’T KNOW AT FIRST.

IF HE EVER FINDS THIS, GIVE HIM ONE CHANCE TO MAKE IT RIGHT.

Daniel stared.

His sister had known.

Emily asked, “Why would she write that?”

Samuel looked at Daniel.

“Because Clara followed you from a distance.”

Daniel went still.

“She knew you escaped Richard’s control.”

“You said she was in Canada.”

“She came back once.”

“When?”

“Six months before she died.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“She saw me?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t she come to me?”

“Because Richard was watching you.”

Daniel sat down.

For the first time, Emily saw him cry.

Not dramatically.

Silently.

Like a boy who had just learned his sister had stood close enough to see him and still could not come home.

Samuel looked at the clock.

Ten thirty-one.

“You have ninety minutes.”

“For what?”

“To file Emily’s claim.”

Daniel wiped his face.

“Where?”

Samuel held up another key.

“The original trust registry is not online.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Emily noticed.

Samuel continued.

“It is held in a private records vault beneath Ashbourne Bank.”

Daniel stared.

“That branch closed ten years ago.”

May you like

Samuel nodded.

“But the vault didn’t.”
