Chapter 11 - Midnight

Emergency lights came on.

Emily ran toward the terminal.

Samuel powered the old system using a backup battery.

Daniel stood beside the corridor.

Vanessa shouted at her guard.

“Stop them!”

The man moved forward.

Margaret appeared behind him and slammed the steel vault door shut between them.

Vanessa screamed from the other side.

Daniel stared at Margaret.

“You just locked her out.”

Margaret nodded.

“I have waited twenty-three years for this.”

Samuel entered the trust number.

A file appeared.

BENEFICIARY: DESCENDANTS OF CLARA ASHBOURNE.

STATUS: DORMANT.

EXPIRATION: 12:00 A.M.

Emily looked at the clock.

Eleven thirty-eight.

“Now what?”

Samuel handed her a scanner.

“Identity proof.”

Emily had no birth certificate matching Clara.

No court order.

No DNA test.

Nothing official.

Daniel’s face fell.

“We can’t prove it.”

Samuel said, “There is one way.”

He looked at Margaret.

She understood.

“No.”

Emily frowned.

“What?”

Margaret’s hands shook.

“I kept something.”

She opened her purse.

Inside was a hospital bracelet.

Tiny.

Yellowed with age.

INFANT FEMALE ASHBOURNE.

Underneath was a blood card.

Emily stared.

“You had this?”

“Clara gave it to me.”

“Why?”

“She said blood would matter someday.”

Samuel smiled.

“The bank trust system used genetic verification for disputed heirs after Richard’s fraud scandal.”

Daniel stared.

“You’re joking.”

“No.”

A small medical scanner remained inside the vault.

Old.

But functional.

Emily pressed her finger to the sensor.

Blood sample.

Hospital card sample.

The machine began comparing.

Outside, Vanessa pounded on the vault door.

“Emily!”

The screen loaded.

Eleven fifty-one.

Nine minutes.

MATCH PROCESSING.

Emily could hear her own heartbeat.

Daniel stood beside her.

“If this fails…”

“It won’t.”

“You don’t know that.”

“No.”

Emily looked at her mother’s ledger.

“But she knew.”

Eleven fifty-six.

Still processing.

Margaret began praying.

Samuel stared at the screen.

Eleven fifty-eight.

Then the machine beeped.

BIOLOGICAL LINE CONFIRMED.

CLARA ASHBOURNE MATERNAL DESCENDANT.

Emily stopped breathing.

Samuel immediately submitted the claim.

The screen froze.

Eleven fifty-nine.

Vanessa screamed outside.

The clock changed.

12:00 A.M.

Nothing happened.

Emily’s stomach dropped.

Then the terminal refreshed.

CLAIM RECEIVED 11:59:47 P.M.

BENEFICIARY ACTIVATED.

Margaret began crying.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Samuel laughed for the first time.

Emily stared at the next line.

CURRENT BENEFICIAL INTEREST: 31%.

Then another message appeared.

ADDITIONAL ASSETS PENDING RELEASE.

Daniel frowned.

“What additional assets?”

Samuel’s smile disappeared.

He leaned closer.

The system opened a second file.

Emily read the amount.

Her legs almost failed.

It was not thirty-one percent of Daniel’s company.

The trust also contained commercial properties.

Accounts.

Shares.

Land.

And one controlling stake in a corporation Emily had never heard of.

Vale Capital Group.

Vanessa’s family company.

Emily stared.

May you like

Samuel whispered, “Gerald didn’t just steal from Clara.”

“He used Clara’s money to build his own empire.”
