Chapter 3 - The Name No One Was Supposed to Hear

The photograph slid across the polished floor.

Emily stared at Vanessa.

“Say that again.”

Vanessa tilted her head.

“Emily Clara Ashbourne.”

Daniel looked as if he had been struck.

“No.”

Vanessa smiled.

“You keep saying that.”

She reached into her handbag.

This time no necklace came out.

A folded document did.

She placed it on the desk.

“Sealed adoption summary.”

Margaret rushed forward.

“How did you get this?”

“Money.”

Vanessa looked at Emily.

“It opens doors.”

Emily picked up the page.

Her hands trembled.

INFANT FEMALE.

ORIGINAL SURNAME: ASHBOURNE.

MIDDLE NAME: CLARA.

MATERNAL INFORMATION SEALED.

PATERNAL INFORMATION SEALED.

She read it three times.

“I was adopted.”

Daniel whispered, “What year?”

Emily told him.

He closed his eyes.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Daniel turned toward her.

“You knew.”

Margaret began crying.

“I suspected.”

“How long?”

“From the day she came here.”

Daniel’s voice rose.

“And you said nothing?”

“I had no proof.”

“You had her face.”

Margaret flinched.

Emily looked between them.

“Whose face?”

Margaret looked at her.

“Your mother’s.”

Silence.

Emily’s chest tightened.

“My mother?”

Margaret nodded.

“Clara.”

Emily frowned.

“You said Clara was Daniel’s sister.”

“She was.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Emily stared at Daniel.

“If Clara was your sister…”

Margaret answered quietly.

“Then you may be his niece.”

Vanessa watched the realization spread through the room.

Emily stepped backward.

Daniel looked at her differently now.

Not as an employee.

Not as a stranger.

As family.

That frightened her more than anything.

“What happened to Clara?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“She disappeared.”

“That’s not enough.”

“I was twelve.”

“Then tell me what you remember.”

Daniel looked toward the old windows.

“My father took her away.”

Margaret whispered, “Daniel.”

He continued.

“Our father, Richard Ashbourne, believed Clara had embarrassed the family.”

“How?”

“She was pregnant.”

Emily froze.

“At thirteen?”

Daniel nodded.

The truth was uglier than she expected.

Clara had been hidden away at a private estate outside Boston.

Richard told the family she had been sent to boarding school.

Then six months later, everyone was told she had run away.

No police report was ever filed.

No public search.

No funeral.

Nothing.

Emily felt sick.

“And nobody questioned that?”

“I did.”

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“I was a child.”

Margaret added quietly, “Your grandfather controlled everyone.”

Emily looked at Vanessa.

“You found this before tonight.”

“Yes.”

“How long ago?”

“Four months.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Vanessa smiled bitterly.

“Because you were useful until you weren’t.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Useful for what?”

Vanessa turned toward him.

“To see if Margaret would break.”

Margaret went pale.

Vanessa continued.

“And she almost did.”

Emily stared.

“Why?”

May you like

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“Because Margaret knows what happened to Clara.”
