Chapter 9 - THE POOL HOUSE

Oliver was found before midnight.
Alive.
Sebastian was not there.
He had left less than an hour earlier.
But he abandoned files.
And files were more dangerous than speeches.
Payments to Rowe.
Payments to Victoria.
Transfers from Edmund.
False death certificates.
Psychiatric evaluations.
Security contracts.
The conspiracy had a bookkeeping system.
Detective Vale called it unusual.
I called it arrogance.
People who believe nobody can touch them eventually document everything because they stop imagining anyone will read it.
Oliver was reunited with Dr. Rowe’s estranged wife, who claimed she had been told her son was at school.
Rowe remained missing.
Sebastian remained missing.
Edmund remained overseas.
But the trust investigation accelerated.
Independent trustees reviewed Nathaniel’s old clause.
It was real.
If beneficiaries intentionally used coercion, confinement, or violence to manipulate succession, offending interests could be forfeited.
Victoria’s exposure was enormous.
Edmund’s too.
Sebastian’s.
Potentially Adrian’s.
He understood.
“You could lose your entire inheritance.”
I said.
He looked at me.
“I already lost my niece for three years.”
The money sounded small after that.
Then the trustees asked whether I had participated in the gala destruction intentionally to trigger the clause.
Victoria’s lawyers were trying to reverse the narrative.
Elena destroys priceless art.
Elena creates scandal.
Elena destabilizes family.
Exactly as Catherine predicted.
I testified privately.
“I destroyed the painting because a child was crying behind it.”
“Did you know about the conduct clause?”
“No.”
“Did you intend financial consequences?”
“No.”
“Did you intend to embarrass Victoria?”
“No.”
“What did you intend?”
“To open the wall.”
Simple truth became difficult to attack.
Then the painting itself produced another secret.
Conservators examined the damaged canvas.
It was not simply a royal portrait.
Behind the outer canvas sat a second painted layer.
A map.
Symbols.
Numbers.
Arthurian-looking nonsense at first.
Then Adrian recognized the family properties.
The painting had been used as a coded asset map.
One mark sat beneath Ashbourne Manor.
One beneath the Connecticut clinic.
One beneath the pool house.
And one beneath an island off Maine.
The place where Lily supposedly drowned.
Detective Vale looked at the map.
“What’s on the island?”
Adrian answered.
“An old hunting lodge.”
Police records showed no search team had entered it during Lily’s disappearance.
Why?
May you like
Victoria told authorities it had burned years earlier.
Satellite images showed the lodge was still standing.
