Chapter 13 - THE SILENCE LEDGER

The ledger had supposedly disappeared after Nathaniel’s death.

Catherine had seen it once.

A leather book.

Names.

Payments.

Reasons.

Judges.

Doctors.

Security executives.

Private investigators.

Journalists.

The Ashbourne fortune did not survive only through good investments.

It survived because problems were settled before they became public.

Some settlements were legitimate.

Others looked like bribes.

Nathaniel wanted an independent audit.

Then he died.

If the ledger still existed, it could expose decades of misconduct.

Victoria’s warning was not just intimidation.

She was telling us more damage was coming.

Why?

Because she hoped fear would make us stop.

Catherine remembered one detail.

Nathaniel kept the ledger near “the crown.”

We assumed the damaged royal portrait.

Nothing.

Then Lily spoke.

“The real crown is downstairs.”

She meant a decorative stone crown above the old wine crypt.

Police opened the carved base.

Inside was a cavity.

Empty.

But dust patterns showed something had been removed recently.

Security footage answered who.

Charles Bellamy.

The night before the gala.

He took a leather-bound book.

Then flew toward Monaco.

Edmund had it.

The international case widened.

Federal prosecutors worked with European authorities.

Edmund became more dangerous legally because the ledger could implicate powerful people outside the family.

Then news leaked.

Reporters surrounded the estate.

Gala guests hired attorneys.

Donors demanded the Ashbourne Children’s Foundation return contributions.

The foundation board resigned.

All of it created pressure on Catherine.

She had barely been free for two weeks.

I found her one morning staring at television coverage.

“Turn it off.”

She did.

Then she whispered.

“I wanted Lily back.”

“Not this.”

“You didn’t create this.”

“My family did.”

“No.”

“They created it.”

“You survived it.”

Catherine looked at me.

“That sounds different.”

“It is.”

She began rebuilding slowly.

Not as a symbol.

As a person.

She chose doctors outside Ashbourne influence.

A new attorney.

A small apartment.

No mansion.

No trust-controlled house.

Lily chose the bedroom with yellow curtains.

It became the first room in years she could close from the inside without someone locking it from the outside.

Then Adrian received news.

The trustees had ruled on his interest.

He would not lose everything.

But his control rights were suspended for five years due to reckless participation in Catherine’s commitment process.

He accepted the ruling.

His attorneys wanted to appeal.

He refused.

Catherine asked why.

He answered.

“Because I signed.”

That was enough.

Then Edmund sent Adrian a message.

SON, IF YOU LET ELENA AND CATHERINE CONTINUE, THEY WILL TAKE YOUR CHILDREN’S FUTURE TOO.

Adrian showed it to me.

We did not have children.

But suddenly I remembered my fertility-clinic photograph.

My file.

A-17.

May you like

They had known we were trying.

The conspiracy was preparing for children who did not even exist yet.
