Chapter 8: The Housekeeper’s Last Secret

Margaret Collins had always believed she knew how the world worked.

For fifteen years, she had walked through the Hawthorne mansion carrying herself like she belonged there.

She knew every room.

Every secret.

Every weakness.

She knew which family members argued behind closed doors.

She knew which employees could be bribed.

She knew how to smile while hiding hatred.

But there was one thing she never understood.

She never understood Elena.

After Daniel’s arrest, Margaret disappeared.

She left the mansion before investigators arrived.

She changed her phone number.

She avoided every person connected to the Whitmore family.

But Elena knew she wouldn’t run forever.

People like Margaret always believed they were smarter than everyone else.

And people like Margaret always made one final mistake.

Three weeks later, Elena received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

“You still don’t know the whole truth.”

Elena stared at the screen.

Victoria, sitting across from her, immediately noticed her expression.

“What is it?”

Elena handed her the phone.

Victoria read the message.

“She wants you to find her.”

Elena nodded.

“Or she wants to scare me.”

“Either way, it’s a trap.”

Elena looked toward the window.

The city lights reflected in her eyes.

“Maybe.”

She touched her stomach gently.

“But I need answers.”

That night, Elena met Margaret at an abandoned café outside the city.

The former housekeeper looked completely different.

The confidence was gone.

The arrogance had disappeared.

She looked tired.

Afraid.

“You came,” Margaret whispered.

Elena sat across from her.

“You wanted to talk.”

Margaret looked down.

“I made a mistake.”

Elena almost laughed.

“A mistake?”

“You think I wanted to hurt you?”

Elena’s expression hardened.

“You pushed a pregnant woman down the stairs.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“I know.”

For a moment, Elena saw something unexpected.

Regret.

Not enough to erase what happened.

But real.

“Why?” Elena asked.

Margaret took a deep breath.

“Because Daniel threatened my son.”

Elena froze.

“What?”

Margaret looked around nervously.

“My son had financial problems. Daniel knew. He used that against me.”

The truth slowly unfolded.

Daniel had found Margaret’s weakness months before.

He had promised to pay her debts.

He had promised to protect her son.

All she had to do was help him remove Elena.

“He told me he only wanted you to leave,” Margaret whispered.

Elena stared at her.

“You believed him?”

“I was stupid.”

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

“But then I saw what he was really planning.”

She reached into her bag and pulled out an old envelope.

“I found this in Daniel’s office.”

Elena opened it.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

From before her marriage.

Her eyes widened.

Because the papers revealed something impossible.

Daniel hadn’t married her because he loved her.

He had married her because of her inheritance.

Her family fortune.

The company shares she secretly owned.

Everything had been planned from the beginning.

Victoria looked through the documents.

“This changes everything.”

Elena remained silent.

She thought she knew the worst about Daniel.

She was wrong.

The betrayal went deeper.

Much deeper.

Margaret looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena studied the woman who had almost destroyed her life.

A part of her wanted to hate her forever.

And maybe she always would.

But she also understood something.

Margaret had been a weapon.

Daniel had been the person holding it.

“I won’t forget what you did,” Elena said.

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

“But I also won’t let Daniel use anyone else again.”

Margaret looked up.

“Does that mean you forgive me?”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

A pause.

“It means I’m not letting him win.”

As Elena left the café, she looked at the documents again.

Daniel’s betrayal had started years ago.

Before the marriage.

Before the pregnancy.

Before the staircase.

And suddenly she realized…

The attack wasn’t the beginning of the story.

It was only the moment she finally saw the truth.
