Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Smile

Margaret Collins froze.

For the first time that night, the confident mask on her face cracked.

Elena’s eyes opened slowly.

Not with confusion.

Not with fear.

With complete awareness.

“You should have called for help,” Elena whispered.

The housekeeper stepped backward.

Her face drained of color.

“You… you were awake?”

Elena pushed herself up carefully, one arm still wrapped around her stomach.

“Every word.”

The silence that followed felt heavier than the marble beneath them.

Margaret stared at her as if she were looking at a ghost.

“That’s impossible.”

“No,” Elena replied. “What’s impossible is that you thought you could hurt me and walk away.”

Margaret’s expression changed.

The fear disappeared.

Something darker replaced it.

“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.”

Elena studied her carefully.

Those words confirmed everything.

This was not a random act of cruelty.

Margaret wasn’t acting alone.

For weeks, Elena had felt like someone was watching her. Someone was waiting for the right moment to destroy her life.

And now she knew.

The fall was only the beginning.

“You’ve been trying to get rid of me,” Elena said quietly.

Margaret laughed.

A cold, humorless sound.

“You came into this house and took everything.”

Elena frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

“You took his attention. His trust. His family.”

The words confused Elena.

Then suddenly, everything connected.

The strange phone calls.

The late-night arguments.

The way Margaret always defended Daniel, Elena’s husband, even when he was clearly wrong.

“You’re protecting Daniel.”

Margaret said nothing.

That silence was enough.

Elena’s heart sank.

Her husband.

The man who promised to protect her.

The man who kissed her forehead every morning and told her their baby would change everything.

Could he really be involved?

“No,” Elena whispered.

Margaret smiled slightly.

“You still believe he loves you?”

Elena felt a sharp pain in her chest.

Not from the fall.

From betrayal.

Margaret leaned closer.

“Daniel never wanted this child.”

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

Elena looked at the woman standing in front of her.

“You’re lying.”

“Am I?”

Margaret reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone.

A message was open.

One sentence.

One sentence that changed everything.

“Make sure Elena never gives birth.”

Elena stared at the screen.

Her breathing became shallow.

The words blurred.

Because she recognized the number.

It belonged to her husband.

Daniel Whitmore.

The man she had trusted with her heart.

The father of her unborn child.

The man who was supposed to protect her.

Margaret watched the pain appear on Elena’s face.

And she smiled.

“I told you.”

Elena slowly lowered her eyes.

For years, she had believed love was stronger than money.

Stronger than jealousy.

Stronger than betrayal.

But now she understood something.

Sometimes the person standing closest to you was the one holding the knife.

Margaret turned away.

“I should have pushed harder.”

Elena looked up.

Her voice was calm.

Almost frighteningly calm.

“No.”

Margaret stopped.

Elena wiped the tears from her face.

“You should have made sure I stayed dead.”

A strange fear crossed Margaret’s eyes.

Because suddenly she realized something.

Elena wasn’t a helpless woman who survived an attack.

She was a woman who had just discovered the truth.

And she was done being the victim.

Outside the mansion, headlights appeared through the windows.

Someone was arriving.

Someone who could change everything.

Elena looked toward the front door.

May you like

And whispered:

“Now it’s my turn.”
