Chapter 3: The Groom Who Chose Wrong

Andrew reached for Clara’s hand.

She stepped back.

“Clara, please,” he said. “I didn’t know about the contracts. I didn’t know she planned this.”

“But you saw her tear my dress,” Clara said. “And your first instinct was to protect her.”

Andrew had no defense.

His silence destroyed him more completely than any confession.

Patricia’s voice shook with rage.

“You are making a scene at your own wedding.”

Clara looked around the ballroom.

Three hundred guests watched her now, not with pity, but with respect.

“No,” Clara said. “I’m ending one.”

She slowly removed her engagement ring.

Andrew’s breathing stopped.

“Clara…”

She placed the ring on the torn lace at her feet.

“I almost married into a family that valued my silence more than my heart.”

Patricia laughed bitterly.

“You’ll regret this.”

Clara turned to Mr. Alden.

“Please ask security to escort Mrs. Whitlock out of my property.”

The venue manager nodded.

Two security officers stepped forward.

Patricia looked around, expecting someone to defend her.

No one did.

Even her husband looked away.

As security guided her toward the doors, Patricia shouted, “You think this makes you powerful?”

Clara answered calmly.

“No. Walking away does.”

The doors closed behind Patricia.

And for the first time all day, Clara could breathe.
