Chapter 1: The Woman Behind the Ruined Dress

The silence inside the ballroom became heavier than the crystal chandeliers above them.

Clara Mason stood in the center of the marble aisle with half her wedding gown hanging from her body like a wounded flag. White lace lay scattered at her feet. The guests stared, frozen between pity and disbelief.

Patricia Whitlock’s hand still held the torn fabric.

For the first time that afternoon, she looked afraid.

The venue manager, Mr. Alden, remained bowed before Clara.

“Madam,” he said softly, “the board members are waiting in the west office. The transfer documents have been finalized.”

Andrew blinked.

“Transfer?” he whispered.

Clara did not look at him. Her eyes stayed on Patricia.

“This estate belonged to my grandmother,” Clara said. “She sold it twenty years ago when my family lost everything. I bought it back last month.”

A low murmur moved through the guests.

Patricia’s lips parted.

“You bought… this place?”

Clara smiled faintly, but there was no warmth in it.

“Yes. With my own money.”

Andrew stepped closer, his face pale. “Clara, why didn’t you tell me?”

She finally turned to him.

“Because I wanted to know if you loved me when you thought I had nothing.”

The words landed harder than any scream could have.

Andrew looked down.

That was answer enough.
