Chapter 17 - The Counterattack

The answer arrived the next morning.
Julian had.
Airport facial recognition identified him despite the hat and glasses.
He had used Thomas’s secondary passport.
Thomas had discovered the plan and deliberately moved the seventeen million dollars to force the Swiss bank to verify Evelyn’s identity.
Then he returned to the United States under a different travel document.
Julian took his passport and went to Zurich to retrieve whatever evidence Thomas had uncovered.
But Thomas had already copied everything.
He met Claire at the Milwaukee clinic.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Thomas said, “I’m sorry.”
Claire looked at him.
“I don’t know what that means anymore.”
“I know.”
He handed her a metal document case.
Inside were original Hale ledgers.
Medical records.
Trust agreements.
And a sealed statement signed by Richard Mercer shortly before his death.
Richard admitted knowing Claire was his biological daughter.
He admitted paying Thomas to keep Evelyn away from him.
He also admitted discovering years later that Diane had diverted Hale assets.
Richard had attempted to restore them.
Julian had inherited his files.
Claire finally understood.
Julian had not stumbled into the scheme seven years earlier.
He had inherited the knowledge from Richard and chosen to exploit it.
The betrayal had been a decision.
Not an accident.
Thomas looked toward Evelyn’s room.
“I moved her because Julian had access to Rosewood.”
“You could have told me.”
“I thought phones were compromised.”
“You could have found another way.”
“Yes.”
Claire’s anger rose.
“You always decide what I’m allowed to know.”
Thomas lowered his head.
“You’re right.”
That stopped her.
No excuse.
No justification.
Only agreement.
Claire opened the door to Evelyn’s room.
Her mother was awake.
Claire sat beside her.
Evelyn touched her face.
“You came.”
“I will keep coming.”
Evelyn smiled.
For the first time, Claire allowed herself to call her something.
“Mom.”
Evelyn began crying.
So did Claire.
The next forty-eight hours changed everything.
Naomi delivered records to federal investigators.
Martin filed an emergency civil action freezing accounts connected to Diane and Julian.
Paige signed a cooperation agreement.
Thomas gave a sworn statement regarding Evelyn’s medication.
Evelyn’s guardianship was terminated after independent doctors confirmed she could participate in her own medical decisions with assistance.
Claire assumed control of Hale Legacy Trust.
Then she used it.
Not to save Julian.
Not to save Mercer Hale.
To save the employees.
Claire created a bridge fund that covered payroll and essential construction expenses while placing Mercer Hale into court-supervised restructuring.
Julian’s personal guarantees remained his problem.
Diane’s accounts were frozen.
Paige lost every advisory role.
Claire resigned as Julian’s wife in every way except the court filing.
Then Naomi walked into Claire’s office carrying a folder.
“We have him.”
“Julian?”
“He just landed at Midway.”
Claire stood.
“Police?”
“Waiting.”
Claire shook her head.
“Not yet.”
Naomi frowned.
“Why?”
Claire looked at the boardroom beyond the glass wall.
Julian had spent fourteen years believing Claire was the organized woman who cleaned up his mistakes.

She wanted him to understand one thing before consequences arrived.
“I want him to attend the board meeting.”
