Chapter 15 - The Lowest Point

Claire ran after Diane.
Security stopped both women near the courthouse doors.
“Where is Evelyn?”
Claire demanded.
Diane looked genuinely confused.
“I have no idea.”
“You are listed as her guardian.”
“I haven’t exercised that authority in years.”
“But you still have it.”
Diane looked toward her attorney.
Claire grabbed her wrist.
“Where is my mother?”
Diane pulled away.
“I did not take her.”
For once, Claire believed her.
That made everything worse.
Rosewood security footage showed Evelyn leaving with a private medical transport company at eight twelve.
The authorization bore Diane’s electronic signature.
Diane denied signing it.
Naomi inspected the document.
“It was submitted from Mercer Hale’s legal server.”
Claire looked at Julian.
He was gone.
His hotel room had been cleared.
His passport was missing.
So was the second phone Paige had surrendered.
Court security footage showed one of Julian’s assistants taking it from an evidence table during the confusion after the hearing.
By afternoon, Julian’s corporate jet had filed a flight plan for Toronto.
Then canceled it.
Claire had no idea where he was.
The board meeting proceeded without him.
Claire stopped the sale.
But the bank responded to the fraud investigation by freezing Mercer Hale’s operating credit.
Payroll was due.
Construction sites stopped.
Employees panicked.
Reporters gathered outside headquarters.
By evening, headlines described a Hale-Mercer family war.
Claire sat alone in her office.
Her marriage was finished.
Her company was nearly insolvent.
Thomas was overseas.
Evelyn was missing.
Diane remained under investigation.
Paige had confessed to perjury.
Claire had won the hearing and somehow lost everything else.
At nine, she received a voicemail from Thomas.
His voice sounded strained.
“Claire, if you get this, I found the originals.”
She sat upright.
“They prove Evelyn never transferred guardianship permanently.”
Papers rustled.
“They also prove Richard tried to reverse the trust changes before he died.”
Thomas coughed.
“But there is something else.”
A long pause followed.
“I was wrong about why Diane kept you.”
Claire gripped the phone.
“She did want the company.”
Thomas continued.
“But there was another reason.”
The recording crackled.
“Claire, Richard Mercer was not the only person Evelyn was afraid of.”
A door slammed somewhere near Thomas.
He whispered, “Someone is here.”
The message ended.
Claire called repeatedly.
No answer.
At ten fifteen, Zurich police confirmed Thomas’s hotel room had been found empty.
At ten twenty, Claire finally broke.
She locked her office door.
She sat on the floor beside her desk.
And she cried for everything she had refused to mourn.
The husband who had never been who she believed.
The sister who envied her enough to betray her.
The mother who was actually her aunt.
The father who had loved her but repeatedly chosen cowardice.
The biological mother she had found only to lose again.
Claire cried until there was nothing left.
Then she noticed something beneath Julian’s old desk.
A small black charging cable.
She stared at it.
Julian hated cables.
He stored everything wirelessly.
Except one device.
His old digital recorder.
Claire crawled beneath the desk.
Taped to the underside was a magnetic backup drive.
She removed it.
When she connected it to her computer, one folder appeared.
AUTO AUDIO ARCHIVE.
Inside were hundreds of recordings.
Julian had been secretly recording meetings for years.
Claire searched Diane’s name.
One file was dated the night before Claire’s fortieth birthday.
She pressed play.
Diane’s voice filled the office.
“If Claire ever learns Evelyn remembers the baby swap, we are finished.”
Claire froze.
Baby swap.
Not guardianship.
Not adoption.
Baby swap.
Claire replayed the sentence.

Then Julian asked the question Claire could barely hear over her heartbeat.
“What baby swap?”
