Chapter 10 - The Missing Millions

Martin arrived at Claire’s house before sunset.
He brought three bankers’ boxes.
Naomi Reyes came with him.
Claire had met Naomi once at a corporate charity dinner.
She was a forensic accountant and former federal fraud investigator.
Now she sat at Claire’s dining table surrounded by forty years of secrets.
By midnight, the pattern was obvious.
Money had been leaving Hale-controlled entities for decades.
Not millions.
Tens of millions.
Payments moved through consulting firms.
Property companies.
Foundations.
Private trusts.
Some ended with Diane.
Others ended with Paige.
Several recent transfers connected directly to Julian.
Naomi tapped one spreadsheet.
“Your husband didn’t start the scheme.”
Claire looked at the dates.
The first suspicious transfer occurred in 1991.
Julian had been six years old.
“Diane did.”
“Possibly.”
“Possibly?”
“Follow the oldest account.”
Naomi turned the laptop toward Claire.
A numbered trust in Delaware had received $2.3 million thirty-five years earlier.
The beneficial owner was hidden.
Martin placed an old ledger beside it.
“I found this in my predecessor’s storage.”
Claire studied the initials.
T.B.
Thomas Bennett.
Claire leaned back.
“No.”
Naomi did not react.
“Money went to an entity controlled by Thomas.”
“He told me he was trying to stop Diane.”
“He may have been.”
“With two million dollars?”
Martin looked uncomfortable.
Claire stood.
Every answer created another betrayal.
She drove to Thomas’s house before sunrise.
He was already awake.
Claire placed the ledger on his kitchen table.
“What is this?”
Thomas stared at the initials.
He sat down.
“Payment for silence.”
Claire’s stomach turned.
“You took it?”
“Yes.”
“From Diane?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Thomas looked toward the dark window.
“Richard Mercer.”
Claire stared.
“Why would my biological father pay you?”
“To disappear from Evelyn’s life.”
“Why?”
“Because he was married.”
Claire shook her head.
“He wasn’t married when I was born.”
“He was engaged.”
“To Julian’s mother.”
Thomas continued.
“Richard panicked when Evelyn told him about you.”
“He paid you?”
“He paid me to convince her not to contact him.”
“You sold me?”
Thomas flinched.
“No.”
“You took money to hide me from my father.”
“I was twenty-nine and drowning in debt.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“Everyone has a reason.”
Thomas’s eyes filled.
“I gave the money back.”
“When?”
“After the crash.”
Claire stopped.
“What?”
“I returned every dollar.”
“Why?”
“Because I realized what Diane had done.”
The room went still.
Claire moved closer.
“What did she do?”
Thomas’s hands shook.
“She didn’t cut Evelyn’s brakes.”
Claire waited.
“But she did something.”
“Yes.”
“What?”
Thomas looked at her.
“She switched Evelyn’s medication.”
Claire felt cold.
“Medication?”
“Evelyn had postpartum anxiety.”
Thomas spoke slowly.
“Diane replaced her prescription with a sedative strong enough to impair her driving.”
Claire remembered Diane telling her Evelyn had been unstable.
“She drugged her.”
“Yes.”
“And let everyone call it an accident.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you go to police?”
“Because Diane threatened to expose the payment Richard gave me.”
Claire stared at the man she had called father.
“So you protected yourself.”
“I protected the family.”
Claire stepped backward.
“No.”
Her voice shook.
“You protected the lie.”
Thomas began crying.
Claire felt nothing.
Then her phone rang.
Naomi.
Claire answered.
“We have a bigger problem.”
“What?”
“The Hale Trust administrator received an emergency petition this morning.”
Claire’s heart sank.
“From whom?”
“Diane and Julian.”
“On what grounds?”
Naomi hesitated.
“They are asking the court to suspend your control.”
“Why?”
“They submitted sworn statements saying you are mentally unstable.”
Claire closed her eyes.

Then Naomi added the final blow.
“The strongest affidavit was signed by Thomas.”
