Chapter 8: The Ashford Vault

The brass key felt impossibly heavy in Daniel's hand.
His father had been dead for six years.
Yet somehow, Richard Ashford was still controlling every person in the room.
Vivian stared at the key as if it belonged to a stranger.
"I never knew this existed."
Margaret managed a weary smile.
"Richard made sure you wouldn't."
An hour later, the family descended beneath the original Ashford Manor.
Few people even knew there was a lower level.
The estate's oldest caretaker unlocked a rusted iron gate leading into a narrow stone corridor.
"My grandfather told me this tunnel was built during Prohibition," he explained. "Mr. Richard converted part of it into a private archive years ago."
At the end of the corridor stood a massive steel door.
No keypad.
No fingerprint scanner.
Only a brass lock.
Daniel inserted the key.
With a deep metallic click, the vault slowly swung open.
Inside were shelves lined with carefully labeled boxes, leather journals, videotapes, and fireproof document cases.
Everything had been meticulously preserved.
Almost as though Richard had expected someone to come looking one day.
Emma noticed a single envelope resting on a wooden desk.
Across the front, written in Richard's unmistakable handwriting, were six words:
For Vivian—When You Finally Know.
Vivian's hands shook as she broke the wax seal.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
My dearest Vivian,
If you are reading this, it means the truth has finally caught us.
Everything I did was to keep our family alive.
The fire was not an accident.
Neither was Lily's disappearance.
Someone inside our own family ordered both.
Vivian stopped reading.
"No..."
Daniel looked over her shoulder.
"Keep going."
She swallowed hard.
The person you trusted most believed our children stood in the way of controlling the Ashford fortune. I discovered the plan too late.
I managed to save one child.
I failed to save the other.
If Lily survived, she has been hiding from the same enemy for nearly three decades.
Emma felt goosebumps rise along her arms.
"The same enemy..."
Vivian continued reading.
Everything you need is inside the black box marked "Project Legacy." Do not involve the police until you've watched the recordings.
Daniel immediately found the box.
Inside were financial records, photographs, and several old videotapes.
But one item made everyone's blood run cold.
A recent photograph.
Not twenty-seven years old.
Taken less than six months earlier.
It showed a woman in her late twenties standing outside a bookstore in Boston.
She had the same deep green eyes as Vivian.
The same smile.
The same distinctive crescent-shaped birthmark behind her left ear.
Vivian's knees nearly gave way.
"Lily..."
Whispered across the bottom of the photograph were four chilling words.
She doesn't know either.
Before anyone could speak, the lights inside the vault suddenly went out.
A deafening metallic slam echoed through the corridor.
The steel door had been locked from the outside.
Then a calm female voice came through the old intercom.
"You should have left the past buried."
May you like
The voice paused.
"Now none of you are leaving alive."
