Chapter 6: The Woman Who Refused to Die

A stunned silence filled the study.

Vivian slowly lowered the photograph onto the desk, her hands trembling.

"That's impossible," she whispered. "Margaret Hale died twenty-seven years ago."

The head of security, Ethan Brooks, shook his head.

"No death certificate was ever issued."

Vivian looked up sharply.

"What?"

"We searched the state archives after Dr. Mason requested every record connected to Lily's disappearance. Margaret was declared legally dead after the fire..." Ethan explained, "...but there was never a body."

Daniel felt a chill crawl down his spine.

"So everyone just assumed she died."

"Exactly."

Dr. Mason leaned over Ethan's laptop as lines of code scrolled across the screen.

"The login originated less than thirty minutes ago."

"Can you trace it?" Daniel asked.

Ethan nodded.

"We already have."

He turned the monitor toward the family.

A small blinking dot appeared on the map.

The location was only thirty miles away.

An isolated lakeside nursing home called Willow Creek Manor.

Emma frowned.

"I've heard that name before."

Vivian's eyes narrowed.

"My mother donated that property decades ago."

Another coincidence.

Or another lie.

Within forty minutes, Vivian, Daniel, Emma, Ethan, and two private security officers arrived at the quiet nursing home.

Rain dripped from the roof as they entered the dimly lit lobby.

The night receptionist looked startled.

"We're looking for Margaret Hale," Vivian said.

The receptionist hesitated.

"I... I don't know anyone by that name."

Ethan quietly slid a photograph across the counter.

The elderly woman behind the desk immediately froze.

"I can't tell you anything."

Vivian placed both hands on the counter.

"This woman may know what happened to my daughter."

The receptionist looked toward the hallway before sighing heavily.

"Room 214."

No one spoke as they hurried upstairs.

Daniel's pulse pounded in his ears.

Emma's hands had grown ice cold.

Ethan slowly pushed open the door.

An elderly woman sat beside the window in a wheelchair, staring out at the rain.

Her silver hair was neatly braided.

A faded lullaby drifted softly from an antique music box resting on her lap.

The same lullaby Emma had unconsciously hummed.

The woman turned her head.

The moment she saw Vivian...

Her face crumpled.

"I knew," she whispered.

"I knew this day would finally come."

Vivian stepped forward, tears already streaming down her face.

"Margaret..."

The old nanny closed her eyes.

"I'm sorry."

"For which part?" Vivian asked, her voice breaking.

Margaret looked at Emma.

"For saving her..."

Then she looked back at Vivian.

"...or for saving the wrong child."

The room fell deathly silent.

Daniel stared at the old woman in disbelief.

May you like

"What do you mean..."

"...the wrong child?"
