Chapter 1: The Ruby Falls

The wedding was supposed to be flawless.
Crystal chandeliers cast warm light across the ballroom as a string quartet played softly beneath the towering floral arch. Hundreds of guests watched the bride with admiration, whispering about how breathtaking she looked in her ivory satin gown.
Only one pair of eyes held nothing but contempt.
Vivian Ashford, the groom's mother, sat rigidly in the front row, her diamond-encrusted cane resting beside her chair. The matriarch of the Ashford family had spent decades building an empire worth billions. She had accepted senators into her home, negotiated with CEOs, and buried rivals without ever raising her voice.
But today she was losing her only son.
Or so she believed.
Emma Carter smiled nervously as she reached the altar beside Daniel Ashford. She had spent years proving she loved him for who he was, not for the fortune attached to his last name.
To Vivian, that only made Emma a better actress.
The officiant had barely begun speaking when Vivian stood.
"I object."
The room froze.
Daniel frowned. "Mother... don't do this."
"I've spent months investigating this woman." Vivian's voice echoed through the silent ballroom. "She's after our family name. Our money. Our legacy."
Emma's face turned pale.
"I don't want your money."
Vivian laughed coldly.
"Every gold-digger says that."
Gasps rippled through the crowd.
Daniel stepped protectively in front of Emma.
"That's enough."
Vivian ignored him. She marched toward the bride with surprising speed, her anger finally breaking through decades of polished elegance.
"If you're so innocent..." she hissed, "...then you won't mind everyone seeing what you're hiding."
Before anyone could stop her, Vivian seized the neckline of Emma's wedding dress.
The fabric tore with a sharp rip.
Women screamed.
Daniel grabbed his mother's arm too late.
A thin silver chain snapped beneath the torn lace.
Something heavy slid from beneath Emma's dress and struck her collarbone before falling into her trembling hands.
A ruby ring.
Old.
Handcrafted.
Surrounded by delicate engravings almost erased by time.
The moment Vivian saw it, every drop of color drained from her face.
Her knees buckled.
"No..."
The whisper barely escaped her lips.
"That's impossible."
Emma stared at the ring in confusion.
"I've worn this since I was a child."
Vivian's hands shook uncontrollably as tears welled in eyes that hadn't cried in nearly thirty years.
"My mother..." she whispered. "She commissioned this ring... after my daughter was born."
The ballroom fell into stunned silence.
Daniel looked from the ring to his mother's broken expression.
"What daughter?"
Vivian slowly lifted terrified eyes toward Emma.
"The daughter who disappeared twenty-seven years ago..."
May you like
She took one shaky step forward.
"...the daughter I've searched for every single day since."
