Chapter 17 – The Voice on the Other End

The summer after high school graduation, Chloe Harper stood outside the County Emergency Communications Center wearing a navy-blue trainee uniform.

Her hands were sweating.

Officer Martinez, now promoted to lieutenant, waited beside the entrance.

"I can't believe this is really happening," he said with a grin.

Chloe laughed.

"Neither can I."

"You nervous?"

She looked at the building.

"A little."

He smiled knowingly.

"Good."

She frowned.

"Good?"

"The people who stop being nervous usually stop caring."

The training academy was harder than Chloe expected.

Dispatchers had to think quickly, speak calmly, and make life-or-death decisions in seconds.

Every call mattered.

Some were false alarms.

Some were car accidents.

Some were heart attacks.

Every caller sounded different.

But they all had one thing in common.

They needed someone to stay calm when they couldn't.

Chloe understood that better than anyone.

Three months later, she worked her first overnight shift.

The digital clock above the room read 11:46 p.m.

One minute later...

A headset chimed.

"911, what's your emergency?"

Silence.

Soft breathing.

Then...

A tiny voice.

"My daddy is hurting my mommy."

Time stopped.

The room disappeared.

For one terrifying heartbeat, Chloe was twelve years old again.

Inside a closet.

Holding Ethan.

Listening for footsteps.

She closed her eyes for half a second.

Then her training took over.

"You're doing a very brave thing by calling me."

The child began crying.

"I don't know what to do."

"Can you tell me your name?"

"Sophie."

"Hi, Sophie."

"My name is Chloe."

"I'm going to stay with you the whole time."

Her voice never shook.

Not once.

Police units were dispatched within seconds.

Paramedics followed.

Chloe remained on the line until officers confirmed the family was safe.

When the call ended, she quietly removed her headset.

A single tear rolled down her cheek.

Not because the memories had returned.

Because this time...

She had been the calm voice on the other end.

After her shift ended at dawn, Lieutenant Martinez was waiting outside with two cups of coffee.

"I heard about your first major call."

Chloe nodded.

"I kept thinking about that night."

Martinez smiled.

"I know."

She looked toward the sunrise.

"I finally understand what the dispatcher gave me."

May you like

"What was that?"

"Hope."
