Chapter 12 – The House on Maple Street

Three years after the night Chloe called 911, something extraordinary happened.

Melissa bought a house.

It wasn't large.

White siding.

A maple tree in the front yard.

A wooden porch with two rocking chairs.

To Ethan it looked like a castle.

To Melissa it looked impossible.

To Chloe...

It looked safe.

Neighbors welcomed them with homemade casseroles and fresh flowers.

One elderly man noticed Ethan carefully studying every door lock.

Without asking questions, he installed brighter porch lights the next day.

"No charge," he smiled.

"Everybody deserves to feel safe."

Officer Martinez visited that weekend carrying a small housewarming gift.

It was the stuffed police bear.

Cleaned.

Restitched.

Looking almost new.

"I think he belongs with you now."

Chloe laughed.

"I thought he belonged to the department."

"He did."

"I think he's retired."

She hugged the little bear one last time before placing him on a shelf in her bedroom.

Not because she still needed protection.

Because she wanted to remember the people who had given it.

That evening, the family gathered on the porch to watch the sunset.

Ethan leaned against Chloe.

"Do you remember hide-and-seek?"

Chloe looked toward him.

"I do."

He smiled.

"I like the new kind better."

"What new kind?"

"The kind where nobody has to hide."

Chloe wrapped an arm around his shoulders.

Above them, the maple leaves swayed gently in the evening breeze.

For the first time in a very long time...

The only sounds around the Harper family were laughter, crickets, and the quiet promise that tomorrow would be another peaceful day.
