Chapter 10 – A Letter Never Sent
In prison, Brian Harper attended mandatory counseling for the first time.
At first, he resisted every session.
Then one afternoon, a counselor placed a blank sheet of paper in front of him.
"Write a letter to your daughter."
"You don't have to mail it."
"You only have to tell the truth."
Brian stared at the page for nearly an hour.
Finally, he began writing.
Dear Chloe,
For years I convinced myself that alcohol was the problem.
Then I blamed stress.
Then I blamed your mother.
The truth is harder.
I chose anger over love.
You were the child.
I was supposed to protect you.
Instead... you protected everyone from me.
When he finished, he folded the letter and placed it inside his Bible.
He never mailed it.
He wasn't sure he deserved to.
Across town, Chloe never thought about her father very often anymore.
Not because she had forgiven him.
Because her life had become too full to revolve around him.
She joined the storytelling club again.
She earned excellent grades.
She even made her first real friend, Maya, who knew pieces of Chloe's past but never treated her differently.
Healing wasn't forgetting.
Healing was making room for new memories.
Melissa eventually became assistant manager at the bakery.
Linda hugged her after announcing the promotion.
"I hired someone looking for a second chance."
"I ended up finding my best employee."
For the first time in years, Melissa believed compliments instead of questioning them.
One evening Ethan looked up from his homework.
"Mom?"
"Yes?"
"Are we a normal family now?"
Melissa smiled softly.
"I think..."
