Chapter 15: What the Camera Could Not Show

One year later, the Thorne mansion no longer belonged to a Thorne.

Khloe had received controlling shares through the divorce settlement and the collapse of the family trust.

She sold the estate.

She used the proceeds to create a compensation fund for the families harmed by Thorne Medical’s illegal trials.

Critics accused her of profiting from tragedy.

Others praised her for dismantling one of the most powerful dynasties in the country.

Khloe stopped reading the articles.

Ava’s first birthday was held in Gabriel’s garden.

She was small for her age, but healthy.

She wore a pale yellow dress and refused to release a wooden spoon she had stolen from the kitchen.

Gabriel attended after completing six months of community medical work while awaiting final judgment in the obstruction case.

Khloe had not forgiven him.

But she had allowed him to begin earning a place in Ava’s life.

Forgiveness, she had learned, was not a door that opened once.

It was a hallway.

Some people never reached the end.

Isabella received a twelve-year prison sentence.

During her final statement, she apologized to Khloe without asking for mercy.

“I became the kind of person who once frightened me,” she said.

Khloe believed her.

That did not erase what she had done.

Adrian was sentenced to life in federal prison.

He continued filing petitions demanding parental recognition of Ava.

Every petition was denied.

Biology gave him evidence.

It did not give him a daughter.

Marcus arrived at the birthday party alone.

He no longer wore custom suits.

After resigning from every Thorne company, he had begun working with investigators recovering hidden medical records.

He lived in a modest apartment three miles from the hospital.

Khloe watched him kneel beside Ava.

Ava touched his face, then offered him the wooden spoon.

Marcus smiled.

The sight still hurt.

It probably always would.

Later, after the guests left, Marcus stood beside the garden gate.

“Thank you for letting me come.”

“You are her father.”

“Some people disagree.”

“Some people think blood answers every question.”

“And you?”

Khloe looked through the window.

Ava was asleep in Gabriel’s arms.

“I think fatherhood is a decision you make every day.”

Marcus nodded.

“Do you think there is any chance for us?”

There it was.

The question everyone would ask.

The answer that would divide anyone who heard it.

Khloe remembered the hospital suite.

The marble floor.

The security camera.

The moment Marcus entered and hesitated before reaching for her.

She remembered his lies.

She also remembered him destroying his own empire rather than burying the truth again.

“I don’t know,” she said.

Marcus lowered his eyes.

Khloe continued.

“That is not a promise.”

“I understand.”

“It is not forgiveness.”

“I know.”

“And I will never return to the marriage we had.”

“I don’t want that marriage back.”

For a long moment, neither moved.

Then Khloe opened the garden gate.

Not wide.

Only enough for one person to step through.

Marcus looked at her.

She did not smile.

She did not offer her hand.

But she did not close the gate.

The security camera above the house recorded him entering.

It captured the distance between them.

The hesitation.

The caution.

The possibility.

But cameras could only record actions.

They could not measure regret.

They could not prove redemption.

They could not decide whether a damaged love deserved another life.

That decision belonged to Khloe.

And for the first time since Isabella followed her into the hospital suite, the decision belonged to no one else.
